Asian Youtube Idol

In the spirit of March Madness and American Idol, we here at DeadOn bring to you Asian Youtube Idol. Why Asians? It started out anybody’s game but when a vast majority of the contestants ended up being Asian, this happened:

For your own sanity, it’s best not to watch all these videos in one sitting. In fact, most of the videos should only be watched for about 15 seconds before you look away. It gets bad – real bad.

#1 Purple Teddy Bears – The PBT got the much sought after #1 seed with slick dance moves, their casual blazer with basketball shorts attire (which will be worn by several NIKE sponsored college teams next weekend), and use of instant messenger as a dramatic device.

#2 Kid Pimp – Simply put this is Lil’ Bow Wow with skills. He knows what the ladies… want and he gives it to them with repeated costume changes, sexually suggestive dance moves, and a comically high pitched voice.

#3 Yao Ming Supergroup – Oh, sure these guys have got a ton of press as of late, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t work their way to the number 3 spot. No this trio (including the roommate on the computer in the back) have had hits with other songs such as Jessica Simpson’s A Public Affair. The Yao Ming Supergroup bridged the divide between obscure videos of Asians lip syncing to American pop songs and the mainstream.

#4 Silly Me – It’s impossible to know how many people actually participated in this video – they keep popping in and out- but the results cannot be put into words, so I will make one up: scrumtrelescent.

#5 Killer Grills – What Grills didn’t have in talent, he made up in props. Most noticeably, grills made out of tinfoil. If this guy has any cavities, you have to applaud the commitment.

#6 Cat Serenade – Talk about stage presence! Wow! This guy has no shortage of confidence and it shows in his interpretive hand dancing while singing to a cat. Cat Serenade could have been a top three seed if not for the indifference of his feline counterpart, but thats a risk you take when working with animals.

#7 William Hung 2.0 – He may have got a boost in his career from an appearance on some TV show, but a victory in DeadOn’s Asian Youtube Idol would be frosting on the cake. Bonus points for the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction midway through.

#8 Asian (Fallout) Boys – Possibly the youngest non pimp entries into the contest, Asian (Fallout) Boys bring it. Sure all “it” is is some jumping around, a popped collar, and some white rectangular object substituted for a microphone, but thats good enough for an eight seed.
#9 Youtube Love – The one that started it all. For whatever reason, this is the youtube video I used to figure out how to embed video on this here site. In all honesty, this guy has a pretty good voice. That does not take away from the fact that he wrote a love song for a website.*

#10 Operation: Asian Guys – Operation: Asian Guys broke into the bracket with a creative name and killer lip synced scream intro. This is another shining example of Asians loving to lip sync to boy bands.

#11 James Blunt – You know what? Good for this kid for having the balls to actually sing the words rather than lip sync. Not only that, but he busted out the perfect pair of glasses and forlorn face for this song. Warning for the ladies and alternative lifestyle males: He goes topless, so don’t get too excited.

#12 Big Lip Sync – Now that ticket prices to concerts are through the roof, the real fans get stuck up in the nose bleeds. Not so bad for so called “real” artists who rely on their music and can pump up the volume to 11. Doesn’t work so great for the lip syncers out there. This guy remembers who the real fans are and is lipping to you in the back (that doesn’t sound too dirty, right?)

#13 Viet Flip Homeboyz – The Viet Flip Homeboyz stopped touring after the Summer of ’06, but that didn’t stop them from taking the number 13 spot in the pool. They lost points for using a “Z” in Homeboyz and then lip syncing a Kelly Clarkson song.

#14 Ebay – This one got seeded so low for giving me a headache while trying to figure out how many degrees of parody there are here. These kids are singing a song that is a parody of a Backstreet Boys song. The Backstreet Boys song was parodied by the Yao Ming Supergroup (our #3 seed). The Yao Ming Supergroup’s video was then parodied by this video. I think that makes it a third degree parody squared, but I’m really not sure.

#15 Hit Me Baby – Bonus points for sampling two songs – Hit me Baby One More Time by Britney Spears and the classic Numa Numa Song (that’s actually the title now, they changed it). This video lost points for not actually being that great and having to resort to a bat and a bad pun to make it into the pool.

#16 Asian Girl – Turns out that Asian girls aren’t as prolific Youtube singers as their male counterparts. That and a google video search for “girl asian idols sing” turns up some horrible, disgusting results.
