IOWTMEA is not just a feature, it is an ethos. Over the course of my life so far, I’ve ingested a lot of music. I’ve written extensively about it. I’ve geeked out about it. It’s the epicenter of my life, and it’s done the job of nurse, camp counselor, confidante, lover, child, parent, brother, acquaintance and godknowswhatelseholyshitisitimportanttome. And with that has come a shadowy corner of my collection, a dark, shameful spot full of music that shouldn’t have grabbed me by the collar but did.

Welcome to IOWTMEA: I Own Way Too Many Embarrassing Albums.

In this issue: a musical icon teams up with several other jazz legends for a modern jazz-fusion record, and the end result? Absolutely fucking shite.

Tied to the 90s

Welcome back to “Tied to the 90s“, a not-very complete guide to a decade that was. I’m your host, Yostal, and once more, I’ll be taking you through the pop culture landscape of the 1990s. If you have any suggestions for future columns, please email me at GoinYostal@gmail.com or leave me a comment.

Today, I’ll be looking at 10 Songs from the 1990s that you should probably go download. Now I realize that you may already have these, and that’s great. I realize that some of these choices will be more obvious than others, but if you get a “oh, yeah!” moment out of this, then my work is done. (more…)

When last we left off, Kina had volunteered to go into the Pit, confident that the viewing public would vote in Veronica from the Pit Crew. Surprise bitch! The public actually chose Angel (nice cliched name there, sugartits), who must compete against Kina in “The Scorpion”. Sounds daunting, doesn’t it? Join me after the jump for the girl fight.

Tonight we are back with the Guys. Randy was right last week when he said only about 4 of them deserve to go on to the Top 10 but alas, that’s not the way the show works, so we have to weed out 4 of these schmucks this week and next. Ryan Seacrest kicks us off with, “The guys are back and this time it’s personal.” Oh dear. Quite the auspicious start if we’re quoting Jaws IV. I mean, at least Jaws III had Louis Gossett Jr. (more…)

Today we present DeadOn’s list of the Top Five Cartoon Theme Songs to Boogie Down To:

5) Darkwing Duck Theme Song.  We had to represent one of the Disney Afternoon cartoons here, and it was a tough call between Darkwing Duck and fan-favorite Duck Tales.  While Duck Tales may have been more popular, Darkwing Duck’s theme song has a bumping bass line, some nifty horn accompaniment, and those smooth, soulful vocals.  And some good call-and-holler going on in the hook: “When there’s trouble you call DW.  (Darkwing Duck) Let’s get dangerous. (Darkwing Duck)”

Some weeks are easier than others when it comes to choosing the Asshat of the Week. When Chris Daughtry turns into a big diva at a Children’s Hospital, the Asshattery is so obvious it hurts. But Asshatitude is about more than being a jerk. Sometimes, its about saying something so utterly insane that I have no choice but to bestow the hono(u)r upon someone. This is one of those weeks. And anyone who thinks Paris Hilton has talent will get DeadOn’s highest lowest honor Asshat of the Week award. Who thinks such evil thoughts? Follow the jump and learn.

Short Attention Span Theater is an occasional series by Clare, wherein she chooses a music video and analyzes the shit out of it…because she can’t concentrate on anything more than eight minutes long. Join her, won’t you?

Today, we turn our attention to that most underrated of divas, Kylie Minogue, and her 2000 masterwork, “Spinning Around.”

“Spinning Around” tells the story of a super-hot disco diva, and her gold hot pants. (more…)

HUMP DAY! HUMP DAY! HOORAY!

OK, that was way too much enthusiasm for a Wednesday, but YMR has this Friday off so it means that my week is nearly done before I get a fun weekend in Philly. I hope you enjoyed our friends from the North Country yesterday morning, The Hip do it right. YMR is gonna turn it back down a notch and move it to the Midwest today. It’s more of a Sunday song than a Wednesday song, but YMR felt the need to share. Enjoy!

Why don’t you stop and look at what’s goin’ down?

So I’ve had a hard time establishing my own niche here, since I don’t really fit into any of the categories that seem to be established. I don’t watch any current television, so I can’t comment on this week’s American Idol or Grey’s Anatomy. I do listen to music (rock music even) but I find myself focusing on things in the past rather than current music, so I don’t really belong there either. The one thing I know the (relatively) most about is literature, but that’s mostly scholarly type stuff and no one really wants to read about that here. I also try to watch movies when I can, so I know that I can include my thoughts about current movies I watch. So I see my job as part DeadOn utility man/part balancer (using my snobbery to go along with the normal pop-culture talk of everyone). In this instance I will be talking a little bit about the 2004 film The Motorcycle Diaries. (more…)

Leave it to the party responsible for Crash to devise new ways to piss me off. I was all set to tear this show limb from limb. The only consolation for me, in the wake of Studio 60‘s demise, was the prospect of stepping up and taking a few swings at my arch-nemesis.

But I just can’t. If The Black Donnellys were a particularly crunchy-looking leaf on the sidewalk, I would brush it aside without even pausing for a satisfying stomp. (more…)

As a recovering indie rock snob, Step 8 of the “program” requires me to make a list of all persons I have harmed and become willing to make amends to them all. So allow me to admit I once did not go out on a second date with a girl solely because she had never heard of the Velvet Underground. (more…)

David Spade hasn't been this good since he was the straight man for Farley.

Okay, so my first post has a title that I should shoot myself for, but hey, I think blogging is supposed to appeal to the masses so I will not be using cliches sparingly.  I’ll cut to the chase (okay, I’ll stop using cliches now).  Rules of Engagement (Mondays, 9:30, CBS) is the best new show out there, bar none.  And yes, just in case you were wondering, David Spade is pretty damn good.

The show looks at the every day trials and travails of relationships and life through the eyes of a married couple, a newly engaged couple, and Spade, the single player.  I waited to watch a few episodes to make sure that it was not a fluke, and I have been pleasantly suprised.

Once again, I attempt to keep various peoples I do not know up-to-date on what’s happening with their favorite bands. With the Nirvana post on Deadspin, I think everyone is excited to talk about music today. Not too much to report this week, but news about Interpol’s new album, My Morning Jacket reliving Back to the Future, and SASQUATCH makes a visit. Plus, a Queens of the Stone Age update and great news for those who will miss the Rage Against the Machine reunion at Coachella, after the jump. (more…)
