New Music Tuesday – November 11th, 2008

Well, it’s another pretty blah week on the ol’ new release front – although, we are just a few weeks away from a flurry of major new releases. One of my favorite power-pop songwriters has a new disc though…

So, uh, Yay Butch Walker!. Let’s hit the jump to get the rundown of that which you may have an interest in acquiring this week…

Butch Walker – Sycamore Meadows
The above video recounts Walkers return to his SoCal home after the wildfires of 2007. Sad little story there. Butch has been a wee bit inconsistent with his solo work, but he is certainly one of the best at making a great pop rock hook and has produced and written his share of hits for others in the past decade or so. And I had a great time seeing Marvelous 3 way back in the day.

David Archuletta – Self-Titled
ZOMG ARCHIES ANGELS 4EVA!!!! I’ll give the young fella credit, “Crush” is by far a superior first post-Idol single than the one that Idol winner David Cook. However, that doesn’t mean the rest of the album isn’t gonna be filled with the sacharrine pap that turned me off on the kid during the last Idol season. IF, and it’s a big IF, they kept his dad far far away from the production room then maybe there is some hope here. Also, worth noting is that Archie is going to be yet another singer to take a stab at getting Robbie Williams some American respect as his cover of Williams’ “Angels” is set to be single #2 from the album.

NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL MUSIC – Vol. 29
TWENTY NINE! Twenty freaking nine. Jeebus. This time with more Pink, Katy Perry, etc. Or you could just go turn on your local Top 40 station and hear these exact same songs. Probably in a row. Probably in track order.

Also, there’s a new Smashing Pumpkins documentary DVD coming out today. This is relevant to the post because, whaddya know, I’m heading off to see the Pumpkins at DAR Hall tonight. So, that’ll be fun.
