All sorts of fun today. We have some new Keri Hilson, the All-American Rejects getting some love, and me, too, disliking “Get on Your Boots.” Oh, and a surprise. Jump with me. (more…)

Neko Case - Middle Cyclone

I don’t usually post about music here, but I’m extremely excited about Neko Case’s new album, Middle Cyclone which comes out on March 3. The first single, “People Got a Lotta Nerve” is most excellent, all jangly guitars and vocal harmonies. It’s streaming on her MySpace page (where you can observe a larger version of the rocktastic album cover*), and you can download it for free over at the ANTI- blog (left-hand sidebar). Neko and ANTI- are also going in together on a charity promotion whereby they’ll combine to donate $5 to Best Friends Animal Society for every blog that posts the song. So, Best Friends: Here’s $5. Everybody else: Here’s a great song.

*Hood-surfing on a ’68 Cougar and holding a sword. Holy hell.

Despite my spot on this cutting edge page of pop culture and witticism, it is true, I have not always been on the forefront.  I’ll pause for that to sink in, then tell the tale of the time I went eletronica-lite.

I am not a believer in the purchasing of holiday music. You only listen to it for six weeks, and there are enough radio stations which either go heavy on the holiday music or switch formats entirely. If you need to hear Jingle Bell Rock, chances are you are going to be covered.

My fondness for Garth Brooks has previously been cataloged in this very column. But it was not the first time he got me… (more…)

There seems to be a recurring theme here – single dominates the radio, I buy a CD, listen to the rest of it, bury it in the Big Black Book of CDs, and never ponder it again.

Rewind, repeat, with a mambo flair… after the jump.

Seeing all the horror movie commercials over the last few weeks, I saw a few for the 2006 remake of The Omen, starring Julia Stiles, which provided the inspiration over this week’s review.

After an extended hiatus for reformatting – unlike a TV hiatus, no one was recast during the down time – a look back at fiscally unsound music purchases has returned.

This week, I pull a disc from the bag of guy tricks – which everyone knows anyway. Learn it after the jump.

If there was a FAIL! entry for poor music decisions, this would earn an entry – for both the producer and the purchaser.

Consider, for a moment, the talent on the Mickey Mouse Club in the 1990s – Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and JC Chavez. That’s not to mention Keri Russell (swoon) and Ryan Gosling. So how could an album put out by the MMC go awry?

Find out… after the jump

Sometimes, having owned and enjoyed an artist’s previous seven studio albums, a greatest hits disc, a live cd, a box set and a holiday cd will convince you that purchasing of the next album is a good idea.

Sometimes, that loyalty is rewarded (everything by U2, for example). Sometimes, that loyalty is not rewarded, and not just in a “That wasn’t quite as good as the last album way”. Join me after the jump for one of, if not THE, greatest musical flops of my lifetime.

Which of course, I owned.

Despite being physically young, I often find myself with enough vindictiveness that could last several lifetimes. Hence, the title of this column. If I come up with a better explanation, this shall be replaced.

It’s the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, which means it’s perfect timing for analyzing summer music.  What says the end of summer like Thanksgiving (I mean, besides something like Labor Day–that’s too obvious)?  As one of the few people that still listens to rock radio, I have a vested interest in what is played.  And let me tell you, this summer it was absolute crap (more so than usual!).  Not only was there nothing good to hear, but I couldn’t even take my mind off the dreadful summer heat with a good “summer song”.  Let’s analyze this further… (more…)
