Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to my season’s worth of recaps for How I Met Your Mother. Welcome, once more, to Urban HIMYMs.

So here’s the deal:

1). I’m not feeling well.  My throat is killing me over here.
2). I went to the Tigers game last night, cutting into my recap time
3). I have excellent commenters who will provide fodder for me and back me up.
4). I’m gonna admit, this episode was not among my favorites.

So, with all of that in mind, I am going to just do the ten things I learned from this episode, sort of a great chain of being, or screaming, or something

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to my season’s worth of recaps for How I Met Your Mother. Welcome, once more, to Urban HIMYMs.

You have to hand it to Carter and Bays.  They know that, at their core, sports are a deep rooted part of American life.  Tonight’s episode fuses sport with the thrill of the hunt and ends up being one of the funniest episodes of the season.  Ladies and gentlemen, The Bracket.

Last week we said goodbye to Chikeze, even though he certainly didn’t deserve it. But, I think we all knew he was gonna be gone in the coming weeks anyway, so what does it really matter? Once again, Kristy Lee should be our likely candidate for departure, but with it being Dolly Parton Week (?!?!) that may not be as likely as we wish. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to my season’s worth of recaps for How I Met Your Mother. Welcome, once more, to Urban HIMYMs.

If you watched CBS over the last week (and since there was a small thing called the opening rounds of the NCAA Division I Mens’ Basketball Tournament on, I suspect you might have done so.), then you know that this week’s How I Met Your Mother is the one featuring a special guest appearance by one Ms. Britney Spears. Some might call this a win-win, HIMYM perhaps attracts new viewers who want to see Britney while Britney tries to prove that her life is not some form of Mike Patrick endorsed train wreck. However, the good people over at CBS’ promo department decided that they wanted to make absolutely, 100% sure you were aware of this guest appearance and used the high rated vehicle of the NCAA Tournament to help promote it, leading to some blowback. I personally thought that it was probably a poor choice to use the line in question, especially because I was sure that the conversation she was having with Barney was likely to end up being a throw away line. I was right. I don’t feel good about that, but I was right. As a ratings grabbing ploy, it also worked, drawing HIMYM‘s largest audience since the Season 2 premiere.

That said, at the core of this guest star vehicle is a really good episode, one which is just overflowing with what The Bad One referred to as “Continuity Porn”. So we’ll see how this breakdown goes.

Ahh, Saint Patrick’s Day. A wonderful time to enjoy being Irish, to celebrate that ancient heritage, and for most people, to go get stinking drunk. But, since I had the flu, and a nasty bit of the flu at that, I was laid up, kept in, and was able to get to my recap of the first post-WGA strike episode of How I Met Your Mother. I’m a little rusty at this, so please keep that in mind. Thank you.

I hope to have new material soon enough, now that the writers’ strike is over, but stupid lists exist in the here and now. For Valentine’s Day, AOL TV released a list of the best 20 couples in TV history. I agreed with a fair number of them (Gomez and Morticia Adams are an inspired choice), but there’s no definition of what they think makes a “great couple”. Is it people who were made for each other, or is it just couples who make for good TV? Whatever the explanation, there’s no way Meredith and McDreamy belong on anyone’s list of great couples, and I wish Ross could’ve gotten the hell over Rachel (and his own mopey self) after the second or third try. Here are five couples I’d much rather see on that list.

  • Jay Sherman & Alice Tompkins (The Critic)
He was a short, bald film critic. She left her philandering, country-singing husband Cyrus (His last album: I’m Being Unfaithful To My Wife, Alice Tompkins. You Heard Me, Alice Tompkins) and moved to New York with her daughter Penny. After a mistaken blast of pepper spray (“Mmm, jalapeno”), they hit it off and quickly became a couple.

Well, I’m back. After a trip to the World Series to watch my beloved Boston Red Sox and a promising job interview, I can finally resume my House recaps and feel like I’m justified to write “Dr. & Mrs. Greg House” all over my notebooks. So let’s get to this week’s episode. You guys have waited long enough.

Episode 6, entitled “Whatever it Takes”, opens on the track where two drag racers are waiting for the green light. Casey, a female driver, is checking her controls and talking to her dad, Biff Tannen. Yes, that Biff Tannen. “I feel like throwing up my guts,” he tells her before she gets into the car. “Are you sure you don’t want to go to law school?” he asks. “No, I hate lawyers,” she responds. Excellent! This makes them prime candidates for potentially botched medical treatment at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.

The music swells–either My Morning Jacket or the theme song from Nintendo’s “Toobin'”–as she accelerates down the track. I briefly thought that Casey was a character created as an homage to ovary-bearing IndyCar driver Danica Patrick, but that idea was dashed when Casey actually won a race. (more…)

Coming off a good season premiere, I was expecting Scrubs to come out swinging. They didn’t. While it was good, it wasn’t as good as last week’s despite having a major event like Kim giving birth to her and JD’s baby. On the bright side, we got a resolution to their situation and we saw little JD (Jennifer Dillon). I’m going to get it out of my system now-that baby is adorable.

And I really don’t want to disappoint all of you, but I don’t remember a lot. Maybe that goes to show how the episode went this week. (more…)

Hi, everyone. I suppose I should introduce myself, as I am the latest addition to the DeadOn collective. I usually do my blogging with Yostal over at the Hoover Street Rag, but I’ve bribed blackmailed convinced the powers that be over here to let me recap 30 Rock, the funniest show on TV that’s not Booknotes.

We open with Jack in Liz’s office to present her with the GE Followship Award. Pete raises the objection that Liz ccouldn’t possibly win a Fellowship Award, as she doesn’t like people, but Jack corrects him. The GE Followship Award is presented annually to the “woman – sorry, person who best exemplifies a follower.” Liz objects initially, but it comes with $10,000 and a giant novelty check (so it’s really worth more like $10,250), so she quickly changes her mind. Jack waxes fondly on how she’s come around after being so resistant to “product integration, pos mens, cross promotion, and adverlingus”. Liz decides she should probably get a 401k. Jack sputters, “W-Where do you invest your money, Liz?” “I have, like, twelve grand in checking?” “Are you…an immigrant?” (more…)

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to my season’s worth of recaps for How I Met Your Mother. Welcome, once more, to Urban HIMYMs.

Before I start my recap for this week, I do want to mention that if you aren’t checking out the “How It Really Happened” on CBS Innertube, you really should be. Not pure genius, but good for one nice additional laugh per week, and they do a nice job of getting things that Ted might not know about in telling the story.

Speaking of which, I do need to know, did anyone else’s parents not go into the kind of elaborate and graphic detail as to how they met? Or do we just presume that by the Year 2030, sexual mores and standards will be so loose in American life that these semi-risque tales will seem somewhat quaint, like sipping sodas at the malt shop? Probably shouldn’t think about it too much…

I’m already giddy as I wait for the episode to start because there are two words in the info guide that set my heart all a flutter: Danica McKellar. That’s right, Winnie Cooper herself is making her second HIMYM in a guest starring role tonight, and I couldn’t be more excited. Danica McKellar, actress turned math whiz turned actress turned author turned actress once more. (I bought my sister the math teacher Danica’s book just because I still have a crush. On Danica, not my sister. What is wrong with you people!)
