Well, that happened, didn’t it? I’d also like to echo the comments of the blogosphere when I say that the two judges at once thing sucks. Hire a director who can reign the show in, ok? And stop pissing off my fellow “Fringe” fans – that’s a show we should have been recapping since the start – and no more running late! Speaking of running late, the Roundtable isn’t! We’re up and live in plenty of time yet again. So jump with us for the Tarantino night recappage (more…)

YAY! I managed to get a Roundtable up this week afterall! You have no idea the amount of amazing one-liners and zingers that just sit in my inbox when I lack the ability to get one of these things up in time. If you watched last night’s performance show, then you probably have an idea of where we’re going with this. Especially if you tuned in for the liveblog.  The steaming cowpie awaits you… (more…)

Except for one particular performance. Join us after the jump for the weekly meeting of the post-performance Roundtable… (more…)

The Paper Brioche Chronicles: Part the first Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Posted by Clare in Clare, makin' it work, objectivity is overrated, Project Runway, reality TV.

When DeadOn was conceived (in the bed of a pickup truck while My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless tootled on the stereo, if you must know) I swore I would be the blog’s resident Project Runway analyst. After months of laborious waiting, Bravo has finally birthed the fourth season of Project Runway.

Let’s recap (and I’ll give the birth analogies a rest) after the jump!

Sgt. Pepper’s Turns 40 Friday, June 1, 2007

It was forty years ago today, peppers.jpgSgt. Peppers began to play. (see what I did there?) 1967 was known as the summer of love, and it was all kicked off with the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles. An album doesn’t become universally loved and renown unless its damn good, so listen to a sample here and go out and buy the album if you haven’t already.

DeadOn isn’t the only source celebrating the anniversary. Apparently the douche bags over at American Idol decided to celebrate by not only perverting it to make more money to support Paula Abdul-Jabbar’s drug habit and pay for Simon Cowell’s ever growing collection of black v-neck t-shirts, but they also wanted to ruin some of the greatest music ever written. More on that after the jump.

Its been a long week, but Thursday is here and as we all know Thursday is almost Friday, so fuck it lets go drink and dick around at work/school/home all day tomorrow until its time to drink again. This week Thursday also means the end of Asian Youtube Idol’s Oriental Eight. Don’t worry though, sports fans, we’ll be back next week with the culmination of this fine series that started out with good intentions and turned into something quite different. The final matchup of this round is between fan favorites Little Pimp and William Hung 2.0 (f.k.a. Costume malfunction 3.0). When I say how high, you jump for the videos.* (more…)

Come Out Tonight Tuesday Night: Hail Social, World Café, March 20, 2007 Friday, March 23, 2007

Posted by Clare in Clare, live music, new releases, objectivity is overrated.

I know I should talk about the bands that came on before Hail Social, but…did The Swimmers‘ self-financed and -produced sophomore album come out the same day? Did I make Amos Lee laugh by calling his set “dinner theatre”? No, and no.

(Also, my friend Judy and I didn’t get there in time to see The Swimmers, Sharon Little & Scot Sax, and John Flynn. Oops. Another time!)

Blurry photos and a total lack of objectivity after the jump.

Jericho: Lost Gone Nuclear, or Sappy Melodrama? Thursday, March 8, 2007

Posted by chilltown in Chilltown, Jericho, objectivity is overrated, TV shows.

Last night’s episode of Jericho is exactly the reason why despite being a great show, some doubt whether it will be renewed for a second season. The episode, entitled Heart of Winter, had the absolutely absurd premise of Jake, his friend Stanley, and Stanley’s girlfriend Mimi getting run off the road by bandits going hunting in freezing conditions. This occurs in the first 15 minutes, and leads to Mimi going for help while Stanley stays with Jake, who is pinned under the truck.

Since the show certainly is not going to kill of its main character, this subplot rapidly becomes irrelevent and a time filler. The only vague reason for the viewer to be interested in these scenes would be Stanley getting Jake to reveal something about his past, but despite seemingly endless shots of Stanley and Jake talking, we get nothing.

Eventually Mimi finds help, despite deciding at an intersection that east (the direction to Jericho) must be TOWARDS the setting sun. Brilliant girl, that Mimi.

With the remaining time, the show “furthered” Hawkins’ covert activities, as he and Sarah went to meet with “the old man”, who had information about the attacks and, conveniently, turned up dead.  Hawkins becomes convinced that his family is unsafe, and rushes back to find that…nothing has happened. The episode ends with Hawkins (seemingly) realizing Sarah’s double-cross, while Sarah kills her partner, seemingly having second-thoughts about double-crossing Hawkins. Bored to tears yet?

The most interesting part of last night’s episode was the preview for next week’s episode, which looks much more interesting. In its first two new episodes, Jericho proved that it can be great and riveting television, and also be boring drivel. Lets hope that its more of the former going forward.

This is what he does: Rhett Miller, Johnny Brenda’s, February 28, 2007 Friday, March 2, 2007

Posted by Clare in Clare, live music, music, objectivity is overrated.

Hi, I'm ridiculously good lookingLet’s play Two Truths and a Lie:

  1. The only reason I took Rhett Miller’s solo debut “The Instigator” out of the library was because of the cover.
  2. I drove from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and back one night to go to a Rhett Miller concert.
  3. I made my roommate Virginia come with me to see Rhett Miller, even though she’d never heard to any of his music.

Objectivity and the royal “we” go out the window after the jump.
