As some of you may have heard, today is Election Day in the United States. Possibly not coincidentally, the DeadOn crew were asked to field the question, What was the best Presidential movie from our lives (approximately 1980 forward)?

We left it loose to cover movies which are about the Presidency (W.), prominently feature the President (The American President), are kind of-sort of-in a way are about Presidential things (First Daughter) or just randomly are politically-related (Welcome to Mooseport).

Pull up a chair to the round table… after the jump.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to my season’s worth of recaps for How I Met Your Mother. Welcome, once more, to Urban HIMYMs.

So here’s the deal:

For the entire year, I’m going to stick with the ten things manner that we had at the end of last year.  Certainly, as a starting point for discussion.  (Warning, this is going to suck relative to my efforts at the start of this…)

Apologies for a lack of entry last week.  I <3 NJ was a fantastic episode, but with Parent-Teacher Conferences, I could not find time to do it.  If you’d like to make notes about it, please feel free to do so in the comments for this episode.

And away we go… (more…)

I apologize for the blatant cross-promotion, but I think the DeadOn reading audience might find this interesting.

So, my friend Mark is running another blog based bracket, this one regarding the “Brilliant but Canceled” of the television world.  I will not claim to have been a part of the selection committee, but I did look over some of the choices and made some suggestions and I can tell you, if you love lamenting television that came and went too soon, this is the tournament for you.

Here’s Day 1

Here’s Day 2

So play, don’t play, but it’s fun!

So here’s the deal:

It’s AP week, so even if I wanted to go more fully into the notions of this episode, I think I am forced to stick to the ten points agenda.  Which is good, it keeps me brief.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to my season’s worth of recaps for How I Met Your Mother. Welcome, once more, to Urban HIMYMs.

So here’s the deal:

1). I’m not feeling well.  My throat is killing me over here.
2). I went to the Tigers game last night, cutting into my recap time
3). I have excellent commenters who will provide fodder for me and back me up.
4). I’m gonna admit, this episode was not among my favorites.

So, with all of that in mind, I am going to just do the ten things I learned from this episode, sort of a great chain of being, or screaming, or something

You have to hand it to Carter and Bays.  They know that, at their core, sports are a deep rooted part of American life.  Tonight’s episode fuses sport with the thrill of the hunt and ends up being one of the funniest episodes of the season.  Ladies and gentlemen, The Bracket.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to my season’s worth of recaps for How I Met Your Mother. Welcome, once more, to Urban HIMYMs.

If you watched CBS over the last week (and since there was a small thing called the opening rounds of the NCAA Division I Mens’ Basketball Tournament on, I suspect you might have done so.), then you know that this week’s How I Met Your Mother is the one featuring a special guest appearance by one Ms. Britney Spears. Some might call this a win-win, HIMYM perhaps attracts new viewers who want to see Britney while Britney tries to prove that her life is not some form of Mike Patrick endorsed train wreck. However, the good people over at CBS’ promo department decided that they wanted to make absolutely, 100% sure you were aware of this guest appearance and used the high rated vehicle of the NCAA Tournament to help promote it, leading to some blowback. I personally thought that it was probably a poor choice to use the line in question, especially because I was sure that the conversation she was having with Barney was likely to end up being a throw away line. I was right. I don’t feel good about that, but I was right. As a ratings grabbing ploy, it also worked, drawing HIMYM‘s largest audience since the Season 2 premiere.

That said, at the core of this guest star vehicle is a really good episode, one which is just overflowing with what The Bad One referred to as “Continuity Porn”. So we’ll see how this breakdown goes.

Ahh, Saint Patrick’s Day. A wonderful time to enjoy being Irish, to celebrate that ancient heritage, and for most people, to go get stinking drunk. But, since I had the flu, and a nasty bit of the flu at that, I was laid up, kept in, and was able to get to my recap of the first post-WGA strike episode of How I Met Your Mother. I’m a little rusty at this, so please keep that in mind. Thank you.

Good morning ladies…and gentlemen, I’m Mr. Yostal and I’ll be your substitute teacher for “Your Morning Rock” today.

As I mentioned yesterday, Mr. Jerkwheat has left me very specific instructions as to what does and does not go on here, so don’t try and think you can pull anything on me. If you try anything, I will make you pay in a way that you cannot possibly imagine. Are we clear? Are we clear? Good…then this will go just splendidly.

One of my favorite bands ever, and perhaps one of the more underrated.  Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The Zombies…

I know, it’s a Monday, and you want something upbeat, and peppy, and that will get you going.  Too bad, you get Out of Time-era R.E.M. at their most down moment.

Liz and CC wait outside Jack’s office as he finishes up with a German delegation. Jonathan pompously tells them Jack is in negotiations to buy the largest cable provider in northern Europe. Jack comes out and invites Liz in, but she tells him to see CC first. Jack and CC stress the importance of boundaries in their relationship; she makes appointments in New York, he works around her schedule in DC. Cut to “G-SPAN” footage of a hearing. CC questions him: “Mr. Donaghy, what are we doing this evening?” Jack gets advice from counsel, then leans into the microphone. “There is an 8:00 showing of Fred Claus.” Liz comes in and discusses her personal financial portfolio with Jack (2 payments from owning her own bike, she has a star* named after her). He hustles her out of his office with the advice to buy real estate and welcomes CC in, saying “That last meeting took forever.” (more…)

Tied to the 90s

Welcome back to “Tied to the 90s“, a not-very complete guide to a decade that was. I’m your host, Yostal, and once more, I’ll be taking you through the pop culture landscape of the 1990s. If you have any suggestions for future columns, please email me at GoinYostal@gmail.com or leave me a comment.

Today, I’ll be looking at the 10 best songs of 2007. Or I should say “The 10 Best Songs I Added to my iTunes Library in 2007”. Between writing Tied to the 90s for a good part of the year, the development of Seeqpod, and getting Sirius in my car and listening to Lithium 24 pretty much non-stop, I have added a large amount of music to my iTunes this past year (grand total: 650 songs). So I thought as a “nostalgia columnist” it wouldn’t be right for me to talk about the current music, especially as I don’t know what the hell I would be talking about. So instead, you get a wide-ranging look at what I was listening to in 2007. Some of this may trod upon ground covered earlier this year, but that said, here we go again…

Jack and CC rendezvous in his office. She’s worried someone will see them, but Jack reassures her that it’s too early for the creative types and he sent Jonathan to a non-existant Italian bakery in Queens. Cut to a panicked Jonathan begging auto mechanics for baked goods. They start to make out, just in time for Liz to stumble upon them. Caught, Jack introduces CC as a business associate, “Laquisha Gutierrez…Arafat.” Liz says she’ll leave them to it. CC: “‘It’ being business.” Liz: “Right. I call the movie Risky BusinessRisky It‘, because ‘it’ means ‘business’. Lemon out…”
