My Jerks and My Last Words Finally Brought Scrubs Back On The Air Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Hooray, Scrubs is back! Last night was the big debut for my our favorite tortured (well, as much as being on prime time television is torture) show and they came back with a big name and two new episodes. I gotta be honest, I had no idea if I was going to do recaps this half year/season. Not because I wasn’t asked to, more like I didn’t know if I wanted to. The last season (especially its season finale which was aired out of order) really left a sour taste in my mouth. But whatevs now. If we get a ninth then who knows. But for now why not?

And with a two episode season premeire there is a lot to talk about. So let’s get this party started, shall we? (more…)

After a spectacular opening week, the Finalists returned with a resounding thud. With only a few performances that rose to the level of Good amongst several that were somewhere between uninspired and bleargh, does season 4 actually hold the promise we all thought it did? Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to my season’s worth of recaps for How I Met Your Mother. Welcome, once more, to Urban HIMYMs.

So here’s the deal:

I’m going to try and keep this brief in the outline, and then just move to my notes.  I’m going to stick with the ten things manner that we had last week.  Certainly, as a starting point for discussion.

Before I do that, however, may I just give a giant freaking hat tip for the team that puts Cobie Smulders together week in and week out.  Hair, makeup, wardrobe, all of you take something great and just make it awesome.  Well done.

And away we go… (more…)

We’ll get to the recap in a second but I really need to get something off my chest. Those of you wanting the recap just go right ahead and click the jump. Ok, here goes…

Fuck you NBC. Fuck you and your fucking top brass and everyone that works at your fucking network. I am so glad that this is the last season Scrubs will have to have that little fucking peacock sitting in the left hand side of the corner of the screen. Even if ABC doesn’t pick up the show and there won’t be an eighth season and we’ll have to see the rest of the originally planned 18 episodes on DVD, it’s a major improvement over you. You couldn’t hold off, could you? You just had to screw around with the fans of this show one last time before removing it from your air forever. To paraphrase from several of my fellow commenters at Deadspin, go fuck yourselves, you cocksuckers.

Yes, I know this is a bit of an over reaction, but I am so damn tired of NBC switching time slots and switching days and making the fans of this show go back and forth. It’s the last damn season on their network. It’s mid April meaning there isn’t going to be a lot of episodes left. But I guess that doesn’t matter. The time slot move in and of itself isn’t the problem, it’s the fact that NBC keeps doing this over and over to this one show. If they wanted The Office and 30 Rock to be their 9 PM shows they could have easily done that at the beginning of the season (back in September) or when the shows started back last week. But no, they had to wait two shows in to move it.

Seriously NBC, I think I hate you. Now, on to the recap.  (more…)

So Scrubs is coming back next week. Woo hoo! As you can tell, I’m very excited about that.

But the better (or worst, depending on your perspective) news coming this week is that it looks like the show has been renewed for an eighth season and will probably leave NBC and be shown on ABC. All I can say is about damn time. NBC hasn’t given a damn about the show in a long time. They were happily going to let this season finish out and let that be that. Scrubs might not bring in the big viewer numbers like The Office, but its fans are very loyal. We had to be with all the switching around nights and time slots and whatnot. ABC seems to have a real interest in having it in its lineup and all I have to say is that it’s nice to see a network that actually cares about the show. But the most important news that comes out of this is that we’ll finally get an ending to the show. While I think having an eighth season is good news, I completely understand why some want it to end now. But I would freak out if we didn’t get a proper ending. I’ve spent seven seasons with the staff of Sacred Heart, a rush ending wouldn’t do the show any justice.

Now, with that out of the way let’s get back to the point of this post. I said in my last post that I wanted to do a Top 10 of the best songs Scrubs played during it’s tenure after the series finale. Well, now that it looks like that series finale is going to be May 2009, I didn’t want to wait that long. So I’ma do the Top 10 now. I’m sure there’s going to be songs during the rest of this season and next that I’m going to love and will personally make me want to change this list. But we’ll get there then. Hell, we can do this again next year. Why not?

So, here is my Top 10. Maybe we can make this a feature the rest of this season and next. If there is enough interest, everyone can do their own top 10 and send it to me. I can post it on Thursday and we’ll get to the recap on Friday. I am 100% sure we’re not all going to have the same 10 on our lists. So give me your opinions on the idea in the comments and let me think about this a bit and I’ll get back to y’all next week*. Now, on to the Top 10. (more…)

And, uh, are you? Really?

Well, just so you know, expect a return to a normal posting schedule starting next week. YMR will be back, New Music Tuesday, and maybe we’ll address some of the shitty shows that are on in lieu of those that aren’t thanks to the writer’s strike. DAMN YOU NETWORK SUITS!!! But, in the meantime, there will be brainstorming and plotting of ways to make DeadOn’s 2nd year better than the first – and we’ve somehow managed nearly 400K views of our little slice of the internets with a month plus to go in Year One. Thanks to everyone who keeps stopping by, we promise we’ll be back in full swing on Monday. Pinkie Swear.

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m back. After about a month off, I’m shifting gears here on DeadOn and I’ll be presenting a season’s worth of recaps for How I Met Your Mother. Welcome to Urban HIMYMs.

I feel very lucky to have been in on the ground floor with HIMYM, in that it is arguably my favorite sitcom currently on the air (it runs neck and neck with 30 Rock). If I feel a special kinship with Ted Mosby, it’s because we’re the same age, still single, and we both worry that one day Bob Saget will be doing a voiceover of our lives. But I do feel like so many of the pop culture references are aimed directly at me. So, if I am a little too sympathetic towards Ted, please understand why. And with that, on with the recap.

(P.S.: There may be no rhyme or reason to this effort the first few times out. There will be spoilers, you have been so warned, but for right now, I am just trying to get my sealegs as a recapper.) (more…)

Tied to the 90s

Welcome back to “Tied to the 90s“, a not-very complete guide to a decade that was. I’m your host, Yostal, and once more, I’ll be taking you through the pop culture landscape of the 1990s. If you have any suggestions for future columns, please email me at GoinYostal@gmail.com or leave me a comment.

This week’s post continues what is perhaps the most self-indulgent effort I have ever made with Tied to the 90s, which I know is saying something. I warn you again, because, well, it’s what I do. I also want to warn you that after today’s column, I’ll be taking a month off. With school starting back up and college football season, my efforts will be needed elsewhere for a little while. Don’t worry, it’s just a hiatus, and I may still post some random other things as the month goes on. So, with all of that out of the way.

At the end of this month, I will turn 29 years old, meaning that I will have been on this earth for 30 distinct calendar years (OK, technically that happened at the beginning of the year, but just roll with me here.) I was struck by that notion and wanted to look at my favorite songs from each of those 30 years. Now, please note I said “favorite”. Not best, not most significant, not most influential, just my favorites. Why they’re favorites can be as simple as I just really like them to having good memories associated with them to something larger. It doesn’t matter. These are just my favorite songs from each of the last 30 years. Now, as always, I can never make this simple, but I did make the rule that once I had used an artist, I could not use them again. I based “year” off the year that the album from which it came was released, and beyond that, I went to town. There’s going to be some crossover from previous columns as you might expect, but I’m going to write all new material about each song, at least as best I can. I fully expect that you will disagree with many of my choices, but it just gives you something to discuss in the comments. So, with no further ado, part II of 30 Years, 30 Songs.

Tied to the 90s

Flag of the United States

Welcome back to “Tied to the 90s“, a not-very complete guide to a decade that was. I’m your host, Yostal, and once more, I’ll be taking you through the pop culture landscape of the 1990s. If you have any suggestions for future columns, please email me at GoinYostal@gmail.com or leave me a comment.

Happy Birthday America. Though John Adams thought that July 2 would be the day long celebrated in American history as that day we declared our independence from the shackles of the British Empire, fate had it as July 4, because well, the public has a right to know. In celebration of this, I’m going to do something I mentioned two weeks ago. In my real life job as a high school teacher, I play a musical review game, not of my own invention called “Shut Up and Answer the Question”. Very simply, it’s a PowerPoint with 35 review questions listed on it, giving students a chance to get a feel for what might be on the test, while I get to expose (or as they say, torture them) the students to 55 second clips on a theme. Inspired by a Rolling Stone photo set from 2001, I decided that one of the theme should be 50 States, 50 Songs. It was not an easy process, though some states provide easy options, other states are an embarrassment of riches really. So, over the last six years, I have refined the list each time out in the hope of making a great set. (Please note, some songs are not the obvious choice for the band/artist because I had already used them earlier in the year and am loathe to reuse tracks.) So, all of that said, here are 50 States, 50 Songs. (Unlike my usual efforts, due to the massive size and scope of this list, there will likely only be quick hit comments and I may not be able to get YouTube video for all of them.) Now go celebrate the independence of your nation by blowing up a small part of it. (more…)

Before I get started on the show, if you may let me take a moment to air out a grievance. To the producers of Scrubs/NBC higher-ups may I please make a request: No more of these “Get to Know the Cast of Scrubs! or Let’s Ask Zach Braff and Sarah Chalke a Bunch of Questions!” bullshit filler pieces. I don’t care. And I would guess a lot of viewers don’t care. This is the third week now that you’ve shown these things. If I really wanted to know what their nicknames were I would Google them. And then go start a blog called “Zach Braff and Sarah Chalke Are the Greatest Two Actors Ever and JD and Elliot Will End Up Together!!!1!!1!” But I’m not gonna go do that shit cause I don’t care. So please, stop it. Just stop. Here’s an idea for you-write more minutes into the episode. I know I know-it’s a risky and crazy thing to do, but it just might work.

Whew. Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, let’s get into the episode shall we? (more…)

Oh damn you Scrubs. Fucking damn you. Just when I think that it’s time for your run to end, you give us an episode like last night which reminds me why I love the show and don’t really want it to end. There were so many good things that happened during last night’s show that I don’t have a negative thing to say. Which is rare since I started doing this recap. I literally went from laughing to crying to laughing in a matter of moments (what do you expect? I’m a chick).

For those who need to be updated, “My Long Goodbye” was the second of a three-part episode. The first part was “My No Good Reason” and you can read up about it here. Okay, let’s get this started before I start crying again. (more…)

Oh Scrubs, you didn’t do me any favors last night. The people in charge of the show knew March 22, 2007 was in the middle of the NCAA Tournament. They had to know that the first round of Sweet 16 games were on. And yet you show us a new episode. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the new epi. Too many shows don’t make enough episodes throughout a season. And it’s not like the game that was on during your timeslot (SIU-Kansas) was the most thrilling game ever (really SIU and Kansas. 45 all with 6:30 to go in the second half. Throw us a fucking bone). But couldn’t you have shown a repeat this week and kept with the new stuff next week? Ah well, it’s not like I’m important. I’m just a viewer that keeps your show on by boosting the ratings. Speaking of that show, I know you’re wondering what happened. Well, follow me… (more…)

Hey, sometimes you get busy, and your obligations to the online literati do not get met (I have no idea if literati is appropriate, but I like the sound of it). This week, a couple of HUGE bands announce new albums, the record industry does not conglomerate further, Brits give awards, and Kanye West proves to be a dick.
