People are going crazy – or as one may say, “off the rails” – so let’s see if anyone gets stabby. Or plays with a gun and accidentally shoots themselves in the belly, setting into motion the ascent of Brian Austen Green. Dear Lord, let’s hope it is not number two.

This week, Silver goes full bore loopy, and Adrianna realizes she may not be terrible at this kid thing. Plus, Brandon is back… just behind the camera. Tease!

So, to be perfectly honest with you, last night was not quite the trainwreck that I had envisioned it would be. I think most of the crew sang well, if not great. I’m having a hard time deciding who exactly deserves a one way ticket out of Hollywood tonight – thankfully, the rest of the crew has plenty to say about the matter of Dolly Parton Week….after the jump. So Scrubs is coming back next week. Woo hoo! As you can tell, I’m very excited about that.

But the better (or worst, depending on your perspective) news coming this week is that it looks like the show has been renewed for an eighth season and will probably leave NBC and be shown on ABC. All I can say is about damn time. NBC hasn’t given a damn about the show in a long time. They were happily going to let this season finish out and let that be that. Scrubs might not bring in the big viewer numbers like The Office, but its fans are very loyal. We had to be with all the switching around nights and time slots and whatnot. ABC seems to have a real interest in having it in its lineup and all I have to say is that it’s nice to see a network that actually cares about the show. But the most important news that comes out of this is that we’ll finally get an ending to the show. While I think having an eighth season is good news, I completely understand why some want it to end now. But I would freak out if we didn’t get a proper ending. I’ve spent seven seasons with the staff of Sacred Heart, a rush ending wouldn’t do the show any justice.

Now, with that out of the way let’s get back to the point of this post. I said in my last post that I wanted to do a Top 10 of the best songs Scrubs played during it’s tenure after the series finale. Well, now that it looks like that series finale is going to be May 2009, I didn’t want to wait that long. So I’ma do the Top 10 now. I’m sure there’s going to be songs during the rest of this season and next that I’m going to love and will personally make me want to change this list. But we’ll get there then. Hell, we can do this again next year. Why not?

So, here is my Top 10. Maybe we can make this a feature the rest of this season and next. If there is enough interest, everyone can do their own top 10 and send it to me. I can post it on Thursday and we’ll get to the recap on Friday. I am 100% sure we’re not all going to have the same 10 on our lists. So give me your opinions on the idea in the comments and let me think about this a bit and I’ll get back to y’all next week*. Now, on to the Top 10. (more…)

Well gang, I found this week to be terribly dull and lacking in any really memorable performances. I was pretty happy to have started it an hour late so that I could fast-forward through all the non-performance parts – that’s really the way to go with this show. As always, the rest of the crew has plenty to say about this week’s show…to the jump!

If you enjoyed Scrubs last night then good for you. If you laughed at a single thing then I’m jealous. Seriously, what the hell was that? I don’t remember an episode where I didn’t even giggle, much less laugh, at one joke or gag. And that was when I was paying attention. My mind spaced off several times, missing parts of the episode. Major parts. Like that scene where Elliot and JD was talking about her patient (I’m assuming)? Yeah, didn’t hear a word. Or the scenes where Carla and Kelso was tracking down Janitor and his girlfriend? I’m not even sure they were tracking him down. And Turk and Cox? Believable, but boring as all get out.

Ugh, I didn’t like this one at all. But I am quite sure that everyone else did. So let’s get to what happened, shall we? Or what I remember to have happened. (more…)

And by past I mean it was a light show that didn’t have any overwhelming issues that carried over from one episode to the next. Or at least so far it doesn’t look like it will. And while some may disagree with me, I thought it was one of the better episodes so far this season. Granted this season for Scrubs is four episodes old, but you get my point. I thought the show had many funny moments and two good storylines that gave us a beginning, middle, and ending. Plus there was a lot of character interaction (mixing Dr. Cox’s and JD’s stories) that added to the show. So let’s start at the beginning, shall we? (more…)

So this whole “Green Week” thing NBC has going continued with the third episode in Scrubs series finale season. And it was a big bore for me. Yes, it was good. Yes, I enjoyed seeing Tom Cavanagh as I really like Cavanagh as an actor and the character of Dan. But overall the show spoke of network intrusion. It felt forced. Big time. It’s like NBC told Bill Lawrence and crew at the last minute what they were doing with the whole “going green” thing and, in a haste, the show wrote up this episode. Oh NBC, wasting one of the precious last episodes of this show on your advertised to the point of no importance week long television event. When will you learn? With all that said, the big storyline this week was a good one with one minor exception. (more…)

Hi, everyone. I suppose I should introduce myself, as I am the latest addition to the DeadOn collective. I usually do my blogging with Yostal over at the Hoover Street Rag, but I’ve bribed blackmailed convinced the powers that be over here to let me recap 30 Rock, the funniest show on TV that’s not Booknotes.

We open with Jack in Liz’s office to present her with the GE Followship Award. Pete raises the objection that Liz ccouldn’t possibly win a Fellowship Award, as she doesn’t like people, but Jack corrects him. The GE Followship Award is presented annually to the “woman – sorry, person who best exemplifies a follower.” Liz objects initially, but it comes with $10,000 and a giant novelty check (so it’s really worth more like $10,250), so she quickly changes her mind. Jack waxes fondly on how she’s come around after being so resistant to “product integration, pos mens, cross promotion, and adverlingus”. Liz decides she should probably get a 401k. Jack sputters, “W-Where do you invest your money, Liz?” “I have, like, twelve grand in checking?” “Are you…an immigrant?” (more…)

Since “1990s songs to download” keeps popping up on our most searched list and finding one of my very first columns from February, I thought it might be worth another go-round. With this in mind, I hereby present to you, the loyal Tied to the 90s readers, 10 songs from the 1990s that you should go download, Vol. 2. Howdy everyone. Only 12 more weeks until “The Simpsons Movie” comes out. Leading up to then CDNMoose and I are counting down the 20 most cromulent episodes of The Simpsons. We’re hear at 13 and I must give you a bit of warning before going on.

This episode is one of my favorites. It’s definitely in my personal Top Five episodes of the entire series. Yes it’s a little weird. Ok, a lot weird especially in Act II. And yes there are not a lot of LOL jokes in there. Yet the entire show, from beginning to end, just fits perfectly together. Plus, who doesn’t like talking dogs?

So let’s go explore the rest of this episode which, along with several other already profiled shows, makes me realize that Season 8 wasn’t as bad as I thought. (more…)

Simpsons

Only 16 more weeks until we’ll all get to go outside in light (that shit burns) and see-at a movie theater near us-“The Simpsons Movie.” Yea! Until then you have CDNMoose and SA counting down the 20 most cromuletest episodes of The Simpsons ever. Because we know that you want it more than anything.

My mother taught me that old adage “don’t hate people.” Or something like that. The point is, I’ve never hated another human being. Oh sure, I’ve disliked people. A lot of people to be exact. In fact, there was this one guy who I particularly didn’t like. We were friends at first, good friends actually. And we were each other’s first kiss. And I developed a crush on him. Until I found out through that lovely middle school grapevine known as the girls’ bathroom that he was telling everyone that we…did it. Because of course when you’re 11 you don’t say the word sex because it makes you giggle like a, well, middle school girl.

Anyway, when I found out about this I was pissed. Beyond pissed. The great thing for me was that I overheard the conversation between two girls (who I also didn’t like) during 4th period, which was the class before lunch and recess. So during that recess break when everyone else was talking and playing kickball and such, I went up to him, right in front of his “boys”, and kicked him in the balls. And once he fell down on the ground I started kicking him again. At which point I kicked his balls again.

It was glorious.

I have yet to do anything else in my life that has made me so proud. And I would do it again in a heartbeat. In fact, I suggest all females out there who reputation is being sullied by wannabe over-achieving in the sex department males to kick them in the nuts. It makes you feel a lot better. A LOT.

Where was I? Oh right, the Simpsons episode. The point I was trying to make is that I’ve never hated someone in my life. And I’ve never had an enemy so I don’t really know what that feels like.

But a character in episode #17 knows all about having an enemy. So follow me and let’s learn about it together, shall we? (more…)

Every great song lives on and on throughout time. We remember that band for their epic song that will last throughout the annals of time, which is until 2036 when that asteroid extincts the human race. Every once and while another band will come and will feel the need to put their touch on the song. Sure sometimes it works and the song is made even better, but most of the time what happens is something I call “Covnobyl”.

Planet Earth was a BBC Mini-series documenting animals from around the world. Everything from an animal attack an animal to…. an animal attacking another animal. Discovery got the rights to it and hyped it by basically say it was the single most important event in the history of mankind. Something that needs to be documented in a blog.

(This is cross-posted from my personal blog, but because it was requested by the Deadspin folks, I am putting the kick-off here. You won’t gear about this again at DeadOn, you’ll have to head over to TFTD.)

The TFTD 128 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians Tournament–Day 01

The premise is simple: Based on Comedy Central’s List of the 100 greatest stand-ups of all-time (pruned to get a list with more recent vintage) I have collected an assortment of 128 stand-up comedians with a simple mission, determining who is the greatest stand-up of all-time.

The idea would be simply this: Make a choice on which one you prefer based on whatever criteria you want. It’s your call and it’s your vote. And as always, you may abstain, or you may elect Brick Wall (you’d rather stare at an empty brick wall for nine minutes than listen to either one.)

Unlike previous tournaments, I will not be providing any quick background. Unlike previous summer tournaments, this was thrown together in about three days, so as opposed to my usual research laden efforts, this one is a quickie to hold us over and finish a favor for some people.

Oh, and to short circuit the bitching, well, as much as I can…I used the Comedy Central list as much as I could, and then just sort of stuck people in as I saw fit.

Vote by 5:00 pm EDT TUESDAY. We’ll tally and post the results then. I’ll also mention that for the first week of the contest, if you really want to make sure people see your wit and wisdom, post to the comments’ widget, just for the sake of time.

OK, that is all. Thank you, and let’s be careful out there.

If you’d like to play, head over here. Thanks for indulging me.

I don’t know how to react to this episode. I really don’t. Because while looking around these series of tubes I’ve found some people liked the show this week. But I didn’t. And I’m wracking my brain trying to find something, anything about the show that I liked. The story lines fell flat to me, I didn’t laugh, and I didn’t feel an empathy towards the characters. First, a quick correction from last week.  I stated that Del Amitri’s “Roll to Me” had the distinction of being the shortest top ten hit in U.S. history at just 2:12.  That was in error. It should have read “being the shortest top ten hit in U.S. during the 1990s at just 2:12.”  Tied to the 90s regrets the error.

Today, I’ll be looking at 8 Things I Miss About 1990s Comedy Central.. It’s not that I don’t like the current Comedy Central, I spend a great deal of time on the network. But, in its quest to evolve and change for what they felt was for the better, the network lost some great things. With that in mind, I present the following list. (more…)

Let’s face it – the compilation movie soundtrack is a bit of a cop-out when it comes to buying music. Flying in the face of the concept of the coherent album, the movie soundtrack (the compilation variety, mind you, not the Morricone or Vangelis type) is usually little more than an amalgam of songs that may or may not be played during the movie for more than a few seconds each. When you buy a soundtrack, you’re usually just submitting yourself to the director’s musical tastes or placing yourself at the mercy of a record label exec with the word ‘synergy’ tattooed over the part of the frontal lobe normally responsible for conscience.

And yet, by my estimate, I own at least 30 compilation soundtracks, and probably another 15 instrumental ones.

So there are in fact two sources of guilt to this post (double the guilt, double the fun, right?).

First is the fact that I like some of these compilation soundtracks more than the CDs by the artists found on the soundtrack.

Second, although some (though not all) of the movies I’ll discuss were utterly craptacular, they could also be considered guilty pleasures.

Enough of the movies, I’ll warrant, are probably beloved by various DeadOn readers, something I’ll argue is largely in part due to the soundtracks, so I’m looking forward to some lively invectives in the comments. Don’t disappoint me.

Join me after the break for guilt and cookies.

Okay, maybe just guilt.
