We’ve survived yet another Motown week on Idol, and once again, nobody was tragically murdered while in the D. Heartbreaking, I know. As always, your Roundtable is here to discuss the events of last night with the usual detailed run-down on what transpired. The usual formatting errors and shenanigoats await you after the jump… (more…)

Urban HIMYMs: “Wait for It” — THIS IS SO GOING IN MY BLOG! Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m back. After about a month off, I’m shifting gears here on DeadOn and I’ll be presenting a season’s worth of recaps for How I Met Your Mother. Welcome to Urban HIMYMs.

I feel very lucky to have been in on the ground floor with HIMYM, in that it is arguably my favorite sitcom currently on the air (it runs neck and neck with 30 Rock). If I feel a special kinship with Ted Mosby, it’s because we’re the same age, still single, and we both worry that one day Bob Saget will be doing a voiceover of our lives. But I do feel like so many of the pop culture references are aimed directly at me. So, if I am a little too sympathetic towards Ted, please understand why. And with that, on with the recap.

(P.S.: There may be no rhyme or reason to this effort the first few times out. There will be spoilers, you have been so warned, but for right now, I am just trying to get my sealegs as a recapper.) (more…)

Very special afternoon standup this week. I bring you a new comic that many of you haven’t heard of before. His name is Nick Thune and the man is a genius. If you missed his story about his first girlfriend on Leno a week or so ago, go hunt it down, its classic. And for those of you wanting more, don’t worry, he will be taping a Comedy Central special on August 25th and should be airing sometime in the fall.Mark my word, Thune will be the next quotable comic around the Deadspinet soon. Until then, enjoy a duet about an episode of phone tag he had with an ex girlfriend.

UPDATE*: The video of Thune’s performance on Leno has been found. Hit the jump for the funnies thing you will see all week.

As the summer movie season rolls along, we here at DeadOn are committed to giving our readers critical, well-thought analysis because we don’t want you to waste your hard-earned money on bad movies, long lines and spending time with inordinate amounts of teenagers. That and we can’t get enough of seeing our own words in the blogosphere. We are bound and determined to be the eyes and ears for our readers…. Well, at least the eyes and ears for the 85 other writers on this website, who account for most of our readers.

The big movie this week the latest raunchy comedy from Judd Apatow, Knocked Up, starring Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen and a bunch of other people you’ve probably seen in other Apatow movies. So, without further ado…. (more…)

Happy National Frozen Yogurt Day everybody. To celebrate this most solemn of all holidays, I bring to you a song off of Stephen Lynch’s new to you DVD Live at the El Ray. As a special Frozen Yogurt bonus, after the jump we have the single greatest moment in television history. So grab a bowl of of black raspberry and enjoy. Except you damn Canadians and Polaks, you have to sit in the corner and watch us laugh and eat delicious low fat dessert.

Fact: Everybody loves Conan. Fact: Conan comes on late and I miss alot of it. This week he is in San Francisco doing a special run there, and went to visit ILM, George Lucas’ special effects company. Hilarity ensued. Enjoy

Saturday Afternoon Standup – Dos-o-pede Saturday, April 28, 2007

So I have Mitch Hedberg on the mind. Sue me. I blame certain other members of the DeadOn crew for continuously bringing him up. I think this makes 3 of the last 4 Saturday Afternoon Standups to be by Mitch, but I’m lazy and drunk, and he is funny, so I make no apologies. Just sit back and enjoy.

[ed: I have no idea what happened to the video. I blame youtube. Its back now, so be happy.]

Between power outages and the events of the past two days, DeadOn went on a little hiatus recently. Our loyal readership was forced to talk about 80’s power ballads. We are all very sorry for this, and lets all just hope that it never comes to this again. ESPN tried to distract us with a foodfight in the Fenway stands yesterday, but grown men throwing pizza at eachother is only funny so many times. Hopefully this little home made comedy short will help you on your way.

Bad “photoshop”There’s no such thing as too much Mitch Hedberg here at DeadOn. Last week I gave you an anime/Hedberg mashup. This week you get to see the man himself when he appeared on Letterman. Hedberg gets an insane amount of jokes into a 5 minute set. If you still prefer to hear your Hedberg jokes over animated cartoons, don’t worry, we got you covered there too. So stop mourning Nibbles for a few minutes, put down remote, sit back and listen to the comedy stylings of the master, after the jump. (more…)

I highly recommend everyone explore the offer. Personally, I think I may go with the Royal Flush package.

The TFTD 128 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians Tournament–Day 01 Monday, March 26, 2007

(This is cross-posted from my personal blog, but because it was requested by the Deadspin folks, I am putting the kick-off here. You won’t gear about this again at DeadOn, you’ll have to head over to TFTD.)

The TFTD 128 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians Tournament–Day 01

The premise is simple: Based on Comedy Central’s List of the 100 greatest stand-ups of all-time (pruned to get a list with more recent vintage) I have collected an assortment of 128 stand-up comedians with a simple mission, determining who is the greatest stand-up of all-time.

The idea would be simply this: Make a choice on which one you prefer based on whatever criteria you want. It’s your call and it’s your vote. And as always, you may abstain, or you may elect Brick Wall (you’d rather stare at an empty brick wall for nine minutes than listen to either one.)

Unlike previous tournaments, I will not be providing any quick background. Unlike previous summer tournaments, this was thrown together in about three days, so as opposed to my usual research laden efforts, this one is a quickie to hold us over and finish a favor for some people.

Oh, and to short circuit the bitching, well, as much as I can…I used the Comedy Central list as much as I could, and then just sort of stuck people in as I saw fit.

Vote by 5:00 pm EDT TUESDAY. We’ll tally and post the results then. I’ll also mention that for the first week of the contest, if you really want to make sure people see your wit and wisdom, post to the comments’ widget, just for the sake of time.

OK, that is all. Thank you, and let’s be careful out there.

If you’d like to play, head over here. Thanks for indulging me.
