Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Ch. 1-5 Friday, June 13, 2008Posted by ladyandrea in Lady Andrea.
Here we are! The moment’s arrived!
Chapter 1: The Dark Lord Ascending
This chapter dawns with Snape meeting with the Death Eaters and Voldemort at Malfoy Manor. Snape informs them that his source has said the Order is moving Harry from his aunt and uncle’s house this coming Saturday at nightfall. Yaxley argues that it actually isn’t until July 30th, but Snape says they are trying to lay a false trail inside the Ministry because the Order believes it has been infiltrated. Voldemort also comments that the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, Thicknesse, is Imperioused and can keep an eye on Harry’s house and means of magical transportation and then he demands a wand from someone and ends up taking Lucius’s.
Voldemort then asks if Severus recognizes the guest, which is a revolving body hoisted in the air above the long dinner table. Draco is unable to look at her. (The first time I read this, I was SURE it was McGonagall and I started prematurely crying.) We learn that it’s Charity Burbage, the Muggle Studies teacher (kind of a cop-out to kill off someone we’ve never met before, Rowling.) And then Voldemort kills her and gives her to Nagini to eat. Yuck.
Chapter 2: In Memoriam
Harry is home in his room, packing his trunk and getting ready to leave Privet Drive for the last time. He cuts his finger on a shard of the mirror Sirius gave him and thinks he sees a flash of blue in it, like Dumbledore’s eyes. Oooh. He then rereads Dumbledore’s obituary from the Daily Prophet, which details his life (how brilliant of a student he was, the death of his mother leaving him to take care of his brother Aberforth and his sister Ariana, and then death of his sister leaving him and Aberforth estranged for awhile, the duel with Grindelwald in 1945, etc etc.) Harry then reads an interview with Rita Skeeter about how her book, The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, is going to reveal all sorts of sordid things about him. That’s pretty much it.
Chapter 3: The Dursleys Departing
Harry has convinced the Dursley of the danger they are in. Vernon is still skeptical right up until the last minute, but Harry presses on until they agree to go into hiding, saying “Don’t you understand? They will torture and kill you like they did my parents!” Dudley is actually the first to agree to go with the Order. Dedalus Diggle and Hestia Jones arrive to take the Dursleys to safety. Vernon almost shakes Harry’s hand, but can’t quite do it. As they are being led away, Dudley stops and asks why Harry isn’t coming with them. “But where’s he going to go?” he asks. Hestia can’t believe that his uncle doesn’t care and Harry says they think he’s a waste of space anyway. Dudley interrupts very quietly with, “I don’t think you’re a waste of space … You saved my life.” (Andrea cries #31). As they leave, DUdley shakes Harry’s hand and Harry says “Take care, Big D.” Awwww! Petunia says goodbye and hesitates, as if she wants badly to say something but she doesn’t. And that really chaps my ass, because I would’ve liked to have seen more out of her. The Dursleys leave.
Chapter 4: The Seven Potters
Harry takes a last tour around, getting a little nostalgic about his cupboard under the stairs. Awww. Suddenly, Hagrid, Mad-Eye, Ron, Hermione, Fred, George, Bill, Arthur, Tonks, Lupin, Fleur, Kingsley and Mundungus arrive. They are going to get Harry safely to the Burrow by having 6 of them take Polyjuice Potion to look like Harry and each Harry leave with a protector on a broom, thestral or Sirius’s motorbike (for Hagrid). Harry of course freaks out at this notion, not wanting anyone to come so close to risking their life by actually becoming him and drawing the attention of possible Death Eaters or even Lord Voldemort himself. Everybody pretty much tells him to stuff it. They don’t think the Death Eaters could know about the plan. They head into the backyard with the 7 Harrys: Mundungus/Mad Eye, Arthur/Fred, George/Lupin, Fleur/Bill, Hermione/Kingsley, Ron/Tonks and Harry/Hagrid. Harry has to ride in the sidecar of the motorbik because Hagrid’s so big. Snerk.
As they take off into the sky, suddenly there are 30 Death Eaters surrounding them. A great aerial fight breaks out and it’s quite hard to describe here. Hagrid and Harry are chased by 4 Death Eaters and Harry fights them off as Hagrid tries to fly teh motorbike. At one point, Hedwig is hit by the killing curse and dies. (Sniffle). Due to the crazy flying, the sidecar becomes detached from the bike and Harry has to wingardium leviosa it back up to the bike, where Hagrid grabs his robes and hauls him on the seat. At one point, Harry sees one of the chasing DEs is Stan Shunpike with a blank look on his face (Imperioused) and Harry merely tries to disarm him rather than curse him, which alerts the other DEs that THIS is the real Harry. Voldemort appears and gives chase. A DE raises his wand to curse Harry and Hagrid launches himself off the bike at the DE and they plummet out of sight. Harry’s scary blinds him with pain and his wand acts of its own accord to shoot a curse at Voldemort, as golden fire erupts from its tip. Suddenly Harry crashes into a pond.
Chapter 5: Fallen Warrior
Harry and Hagrid are at Tonks’ parents house, where they are to take a portkey to the Burrow. Harry freaks out at the sight of Andromeda Tonks because she looks startlingly like her sister Bellatrix. Hagrid and Harry thank them for the help and take the portkey. Molly and Ginny great them at the Burrow. Harry fills them in about the Death Eaters and Molly has to turn away, because none of her sons or husband are back yet. Suddenly Lupin and George appear. George is covered with blood. One of his ears has been blasted off an dcannot be mended due to the curse that got him. Lupin roughly checks to see if Harry is the real Harry because he is concerned about the DEs knowing that tonight was the night Harry was to be moved.
Harry tells Lupin that the DEs knew he was the real Harry and Lupin deduces it was because he merely tried to disarm Stan Shunpike and not curse him. They argue heatedly until Harry declares, “I won’t blast people out of my way just because they’re there. That’s Voldemort’s job.” Lupin does not have a response.
Hermione and Kingsley show up and Lupin reveals that it was Snape who took off George’s ear. Knowing what we know now, I bet he did it on purpose. Hit him with something but didn’t kill him. Actually damaged something relatively harmless. Suddenly they hear from the yard, “I’ll prove who I am, Kingsley, after I’ve seen my son, now back off if you know what’s good for you!” Awww, Mr. Weasley. He and Fred are alright and George wakes up saying he feels saintlike because he’s holey. “Geddit, Fred?” he says. Fred responds, “Pathetic! With the whole wide world of ear-related humor before you, you go for holey? ” Sniffle. Everyone who can walk goes out to wait for the rest of the group. Finally Tonks and Ron show up; Hermione hugs him tightly. Bill and Fleur are the last to arrive and they bring the news of Mad-Eye’s death. They saw him hit when Mundungus panicked and fled.
Everyone gets suspicious about who could’ve betrayed the plan. They don’t think it was any one of them because the DEs were still surprised by the 7 different Harrys. They only knew of the correct date, not the whole plan. Harry says that if somebody made a mistake, they didn’t mean to and that he trusts everyone there. Harry then wants to leave because he doesn’t like endangering everyone. He also lets slip that his wand acted of its own accord and nobody believes him, saying he must’ve imagined it. He stalks off outside, knowing he can’t leave and mad at Dumbledore for not being there because he knows Dumbledore would’ve believed him about the wand and would’ve known what it meant and why it happened.
Suddenly his scar hurts and he is in Lord Voldemort’s head, watching him torture Ollivander the wand maker. Ollivander says, “I believed a different wand would work!” and Voldemort responds, “Explain, then, what happened. Lucius’s wand is destroyed.” Harry’s vision is interrupted by Ron and Hermione. When he fills them in, Hermione begs him to try to shut down the connection between his mind and Voldemort’s. “He’s taking over the Ministry and the newspapers and half the Wizarding world. Don’t let him inside your head too!”
