American Idol Roundtable – Top 4 Week Pre-Show Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Posted by Jerkwheat in American Idol, jerkwheat, reality TV.

The end is getting near boys and girls. We have three more weeks til our long national nightmare reality show of choice ends this years ratings freefall glorious run. This week actually stands a good chance of being entertaining thanks to a near guarantee of decent to great songs being sung in a variety of styles ranging from horrible to not horrible. Learn more, as always, after the jump…

Only three more weeks to go, can you believe it?

We could not have a broader theme than this week – the Idols are
choosing from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s “500 Songs that Shaped

Obviously, due to licensing, all of these songs won’t be available –
any thoughts upon  a cursory glance as to what 2 you’d like to hear
them choose?

*apologies for not making choices myself, it’s been a busy couple of days*

Wow. So we have about 300 song to pick from maybe. I actually like this week’s theme BUT WISH CARLY WAS THERE! Oh where to begin…here’s my guess…

1. Cook will sing Jeremy by PJ and You Really Got Me by The Kinks.
2. Syesha sings Be My Baby by the Ronettes and Respect by Aretha Franklin.
3. Dreamboat croons Let’s Stay Together by Al Green and Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone by The Temptations
4. Jason will mutilate Yakety Yak by The Coasters and Highway to Hell by AC/DC (featuring the uke and a tampon!)

I hope someone has the balls to do a Beach Boys song or some Radiohead or some Zep but this show is not really conducive for awesome songs. Have to play it straight most of the time. It sounds like it could be a good show though. And how the hell is Kodachrome not on this list?

This week should be the best we’ve had in a while.  I hope the 4 left take the chance to show some personality and branch out.  I srsly doubt it, but here’s my wishful thinking picks for everyone.

1.  Cook – Ain’t Nothin but a G thang – Dr. Dre.  Just kidding.  Although, that would be nice.  All Along The Watchtower – Jimi Hendrix and Tom Petty’s American Girl.
2.  Syesha – Little Red Corvette – Prince and Rod Stewart’s Maggie May
3.  Dreamboat – I Got a Woman – Ray Charles and James Taylor’s Fire and Rain.
4.  Jason – Ben Harper’s version of Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye, and Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry

I am pretty sure everyone will play things to their strengths, knowing they are this close.  Branching out does not pay off.

Some dream picks –
Castro – “Me, Myself and I”, De La Soul and “California Dreaming”, Mamas and the Papas
Syesha – I’ll go with a different Prince song – “When Doves Cry” and “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper
Dreamboat – “Sexual Healing”, Marvin Gaye and “Moondance”, Van Morrison
EmoBoy – “The End”, Doors and John MellenCougarCamp, “Authority Song”

I predict – once again – Syesha is the departing one.  Presumably, Jason Castro goes with her in the Bottom Two, since the David-David show down seems inevitable.

In Conclusion:

Someone has to break out the Prince, someone is going to bring out the damn Doors, and I second Matt’s thought that the James Taylor well is going to be tapped. We’ll find out for sure tonight…

I actually have high hopes for this week; ton of good options and plenty of range. Love Fat-Fat’s picks for DC. Dreamboat doing “Sexual Healing” would be hilarious, but I don’t see it happening, not didactic enough. I feel pretty confident that Castro will do Bob Marley. I’m not sure if I want to hear someone do “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys or not (one of my favorite songs), but I’m kind of interested.

It’s obviously either going to be either Jason or Syesha to go and most likely Syesha. There’s enough solid (easy) options for Jason to pull through this week.
