American Idol Roundtable – Top 8 Week Pre-Show Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Posted by Jerkwheat in American Idol, jerkwheat, maybe you should read a book instead, reality TV, singing?.

In case you’ve been living in a cave (or not watching Idol) then you realize that it’s time for Idol Gives Back. It’s an opportunity for celebrities and semi-celebrities to appear on your television and tell you about the things they care passionately about when not diving into their Scrooge McDuck-esqe swimming pools of cash. We’ve also reached the not-so Elite Eight in the Idol National Championship Pool – follow the jump for our pre-show thoughts on tonight’s performances…

Here we go again – we are rid of Ramiele, making Kristy Lee our new
presumptive weekly candidate for dismissal. However, it IS Idol Gives
Back week, so it is possible that they pull another “No Eliminations”
stunt this week like they did during IGB last week. However, this
year, Idol Gives Back Week gets 3 nights instead of 2, making it
likely that there will still be an elimination show.

Our theme this week is as vague as could possibly be – Inspirational
Songs. Gah. Gag me already. He comes more dreck and big weepy ballads.
David Archuletta is likely to inspire a killing spree this week with
his precociousness. I’d lay money on KLC singing something with Jesus
in it somewhere. Syesha can keep to the obvious and “The Greatest Love
of All”. Carly should totally sing “Tattoo” and dedicate it her
husband because surely his facial tats inspire her to do something.

If KLC goes the Godly route, I think she can hang on YET AGAIN and
perhaps it’s Syesha’s week to leave – or maybe Michael Johns?

Gah is right. Dreamboat may be insufferable. Didn’t he sing a Jesus song last week? He might do a traditional hymn now. Maybe Michael Bolton again? I agree that KLC is the one in the most danger of bottom 3. She has found a way to stick around though and will do so. I have a feeling that Jason C. is going to have another sugary bad performance that will land him in the bottom 3. Last up I will pick Syesha. I don’t think she will leave though because in a mild upset (in my mind) I am picking Jason C. to get the boot.

I would love Carly to sing “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” That can be inspirational right? I could see her doing “One” though. Someone WILL do that song. If anyone does “Winds of Change” by the Scorpions they will be my enemy.

Sweet Lord – if Carly was to sing “One” that would be one of the best
song choices EVAR. Good call on something that makes so much sense
that it stands no chance of happening.

“Winds of Change” only if someone is willing to pull off the whistle.

Inspirational songs? This has to be the worst theme yet. Its very vague, anything can be inspiring, but I think we’ll be getting a bunch of schlocky schmoopy crap. And the judges are going to love it and further prove how out of touch they are with the rest of us.

I’m with Fat-Fat, I think Jason is going to struggle this week and will be in the bottom 3. I think we may see Brooke there again and we will finally say goodbye to KLC.

Know what I find inspirational? Naveed by Our Lady Peace. I could likely run through a wall (dry, not brick) after listening to it. I don’t think any of the contestants would sing it, but I am just throwing it out there for their consideration.

Similar to Jerkwheat, I thought for sure this would be another “No Elimination” trick week, but after seeing the Three Episode commercial during NASCAR repeatedly, they wouldn’t dare get us to watch an extra episode of Idol results just to sell more commercials… right?

This week is tailor-made for David Achuleta and most of the girls (Brooke, Carly, and possibly KLC). Based on Jason Castro’s performances early on, I think he should be all right.

I don’t see how David Cook can do his thing on an inspirational song, but maybe he will surprise me. Michael Johns and Syesha? Something somewhat forgettable.

Bottom Three – KLC, Johns, Syesha. Michael Johns goes home – the other two evidently have voting blocs going.

In Conclusion:

We’ve got a pretty split decision heading into the performance episode as to whom we are expecting to stink up the joint – rest assured that thanks to the “inspirational” theme, the real loser will be the home audience. Also, curses to JB* because the rest of my day will be spent with Raine Maida in my head.

@JB: well, the Marines were inspired by Iron Maiden’s The Trooper in World War Z so hopefully we get that

Might KLC do Garth’s “We Shall Be Free?” Not one of his finest but it certainly fits. “The Change” would actually be a far better song to go with. Or has Garth banned use of his songs from American Idol? Is that why we’ve never had a Garth Brooks night (potential greatness there)? I could see him doing that but he might ease up for something like Idol Gives Back.

I’d be interested to hear some:
Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy Jr., Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, or anything off Seven Swans
Leonard Cohen – Suzanne, The Partisan or that other song
Elbow – Grace Under Pressure, The Everthere
Tom Waits – Way Down in the Hole
Damien Rice – Cannonball, Eskimo, Coconut Skins

I actually think there’s a lot of potential here, but we’re probably going to get some schmaltzy shit. And I have no idea who’s going home tonight; KLC’s obviously the worst left, but …

Hey JB – looks like we may be getting some OLP (although not Naveed) – MJ’s Big Blog, which is a great Idol site, is starting to put up spoilers and is saying that David Cook will be performing “Innocent” tonight.

And Archuletta is singing fucking Robbie Williams

Make Your Own Kind of Music by Mama Cass Elliot would be hilarious.
