Maybe the only time you’ll see 50 Cent ’round these parts.
“Go shawty, it’s your birthday.” Well, yeah, but I’m 6’4″. (Updates!)
The chorus is a lot defter with this MTV edit, deliciously vague. But when this song first came out (about the time I started paying attention to music and, by extension, hip-hop), it was remarkable mostly for the bruising, epic Dr. Dre production (still perhaps his best work this century) and for 50’s cadence and voice, which is still, when he’s not fiddling around with vocoders or limiting himself to choruses in an attempt to take the pop-rap throne he ridiculed Ja Rule for holding, one of the top five in the game for timbre and tone.
Also, I’m 18 today. Suggestions?
Best birthday present I’ve already gotten today from anyone other than the Rockette (you know, I didn’t think it was going to take a double conditional statement) is this one, from both halves of OutKast, off of Big Boi’s solo project this summer:
It’s genius. Genius, I tell you. Andre 3000/Three Stacks, as he’s been going by of late, eviscerates this track, an exquisite fusion of bumpable and just odd enough to be an instant classic for the mainstream and the street, pairing “Nintendo Wiis” with “window” and “Whopper with cheese” and sounding off on inequality and the proliferation of sling-rap.
Props to Nah Right for giving me the CD-quality MP3 to share with you all. Even non-hip-hoppers need this song in their lives.
