1520 Sedgwick Avenue: February 20th, 2008 Wednesday, February 20, 2008

Posted by Andy Hutchins in 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, Rockabye.

The classic “know the ledge” track for Wisdom Wednesday.

“It’s like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder…”

This is “ghetto CNN” before gangster rap clung to it as an excuse for its existence. But Grandmaster Flash is way smoother than the early ’90s MCs under fire from all sides in the public eye, and he glides, with surprising lyrical proficiency for the ’80s, over this spare beat, detailing every corner and every viewpoint.

The bridge and hook are probably, for me, the most memorable and meaningful lines in hip-hop: They capture this mood, this place, more than anything before or since. And the bridge (“Don’t push me…) is a lesson in chopping up a flow for maximum dramatic effect, in this case the build-up of a smoldering volcano.

And I hope you watched the whole video. It’s worth six minutes.

Knowledge is power.

Great choice

Last listened to – Sunday.

My 15-year old daughter was listening to it last night on my Juke. Without prompting from dad, I might add (right after Brass Monkey).
