New school and high-IQ for the first and a Friday. (Some NSFW language.)
“And I shall convince that I’m the truth, yo/Though they try to block me like Munoz.” Do that dance, indeed.
Olubowale Folarin is my pick for the Next Big Thing in hip-hop for a variety of reasons, but the biggest, best one is this: He can rap.
This, “W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E.,” a lyrical joyride on Justice’s ubiquitous, virulent, and slippery “D.A.N.C.E.” beat, is Exhibit A in parts: He deploys references to half the Cincinnati Bengals roster from Tecmo Bowl and none of them are awkward; “More birds than Noah’s Ark,” a dagger-sharp simile, is merely placed in the middle of a verse; the word “loquacious” is thrown in, correctly; he eviscerates Lindsay Lohan and her relationship to Samantha Ronson, who just happens to be the sister of his producer and patron, and shrugs it off by blaming it on his pen; and there’s an extended “Saved By the Bell” reference.
This is several different kinds of brilliant, and it’s not the only great track Wale’s ever done, either. I have to keep something in reserve, though.
Enjoy the weekend. See you Monday.
