The Return Of The Show You Love To Hate Tuesday, January 15, 2008

That’s right…it’s back. Tonight, Fox brings back it’s ratings juggernaut (even though it was down 10% or so last year, it still had twice of audience of the next highest show). American Idol is here again. Sure, last year’s crop was actually kinda boring. Sanjaya showed us the power of Vote For The Worst, Blake let us know that beat boxing could be added (in both “kinda effective and different” and “very annoying and useless” format) to anything, and, uh, other people were on there too. I just don’t really remember any of them. There was a fat dude early on, right? I hear Jordin gets some radio play. However, I don’t really listen to Top 40 radio so I think I’ve heard “Tattoo” in it’s entirety maybe two times.

Let’s face it, we haven’t had a winner that has actually been totally commercially successful since Carrie Underwood. Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard have lost their record deals, as did former runner-up Katherine McPhee. And really, it’s just Carrie and Kelly Clarkson (of the winners) that have sold any albums consistently. However, Kelly’s latest release has struggled mightily compared to her last album. There has been some success out of the runner-up slots recently, as Chris Daughtry has somehow created the new Nickleback after an unexpected early exit two years ago. Jennifer Hudson managed to win an Oscar, but do was she a one-trick pony or will we actually see more of her?

Can AI actually create an Idol anymore? Do we just watch it out of habit? Another season as bland as the last one would be the harbinger of doom for many shows, but AI may be able to escape that fate considering there really is no competition for viewership thanks to the writer’s strike. So, let’s talk about this early. Are you with us for another year of AI? Are you actually excited? I’m feeling kinda “meh” about it all right now myself. But, for the next few weeks, we can all enjoy the freak show of the auditions. Here’s hoping we get some interesting contestants this coming season.

You’ve hit the nail on the head – with the writer’s strike, AI will get a lot of “apathy watching” since there is nothing else to do.

It’s pretty amazing that it has stayed on top for like 6 years. Normally reality shows fade from the top after only a couple of seasons.

I didn’t know Katharine lost her record deal; didn’t she have a single (and album) that did pretty well?

I’m not real excited either, but what else is on?

I just watched the last 10 mins, but really it was just because of the “apathy watching.” At some point there has to be something else though right? I’m not going to be stuck watching this for the rest of the spring, am I?

There’s always The Biggest Loser:Couples…for a few more weeks at least. I split time betwixt the two.

One of the guys looked like Tobias from Arrested Development.
