My Number One Doctor-Was Mediocre At Best

If you enjoyed Scrubs last night then good for you. If you laughed at a single thing then I’m jealous. Seriously, what the hell was that? I don’t remember an episode where I didn’t even giggle, much less laugh, at one joke or gag. And that was when I was paying attention. My mind spaced off several times, missing parts of the episode. Major parts. Like that scene where Elliot and JD was talking about her patient (I’m assuming)? Yeah, didn’t hear a word. Or the scenes where Carla and Kelso was tracking down Janitor and his girlfriend? I’m not even sure they were tracking him down. And Turk and Cox? Believable, but boring as all get out.

Ugh, I didn’t like this one at all. But I am quite sure that everyone else did. So let’s get to what happened, shall we? Or what I remember to have happened.

Three storylines tonight. We’ll start with the first one that didn’t really go with the other two. Lady has come by the hospital to visit Janitor (and he’s taken up speaking in a Western accent because he’s smitten) and Carla doesn’t understand why Lady would ever be involved with Janitor. She talks to her and finds out that she’s completely normal and talks to Kelso about it. They find out that the reason Lady is with Janitor is that he’s pretending to be normal. Carla confronts him about it and tells him that if he likes he that he needs to tell her who he really is. Janitor does this, telling Lady all his crazy (“I stuff dead animals, sometimes with other dead animals”) and Carla, seeing what a mess it’s becoming, stops him, telling Lady that Janitor is joking. She tells him that he has to release his crazy to her in little small increments, not all at once. At the end, while he and Lady is together, he shows her one of his dead squirrels that he “got at a swap meet,” but she hates it. And we see his sad face. While I liked that the story involved Carla and Janitor as they never really have any stories together (minus those few episodes in the middle of season 5), it was boring. Yeah, we knew Janitor had to have been doing something for him to get a chick as he’s crazy. Maybe it wasn’t enough? Maybe we should have saw more of him trying to be normal and more of him releasing his crazy? I don’t know. The whole thing was boring. Although I did enjoy all of Kelso’s comments while eating his muffins and drawing on Doug’s and the random nurse’s face for telling him what happened in the last Harry Potter novel. And I must say that after last week’s revelation about his impending retirement, I liked that Kelso was in a light story this week. He would want to continue the charade for the rest of the hospital.

Next story dealt mostly with Cox and Turk with pieces of JD thrown in. And it was the name of the episode this week. Cox and Turk are having competitions with each other despite, as JD puts it, not being friends. Cox tells him it’s because they’re men and winners and that’s what men and winners do. JD would understand that if he had ever won anything in his life before. Kelso signs the hospital up for a website called rateyourdoc.org and Turk and Cox are immediately competitive over it, spending more time with patients and not going into outburst over their stupid home remedies (was that guy eating a pepper? I thought he was, but I’m not sure.) When they first go to look at who’s in first, they find out that it’s neither of them, but JD who’s #1. JD throws this in their face and they decided to sabotage him by getting The Todd to tell all his patients that his name is Dr. John Dorian. When JD finds out that his ranking has gone down from 1 to 23, he lashes into Turk about not being able to win one thing. At the end Turk makes it up to him by letting JD win at basketball and after every bucket JD makes they yell out “White Lighting.” Once again, big big bore. The Turk not being close to his patients thing is a bit of a stretch, as he has good bedside manner, and a job by the way, by following JD’s lead in going the extra mile for his patients. Now all of a sudden Turk doesn’t really want to see his patients? And JD wanting to win in something? When the hell did he ever care about winning at anything? Oh wait, this episode he cared about winning at something. I don’t know, this one just seemed like a set up for the website. The daydream within a daydream about the unicorn fell badly. Although I must admit I did like how JD thought he had won the muffins but in turn finished second to Kelso. But other than that…eh.

Now to the heavy story of the week. Elliot’s patient Shannon has ALS. They’ve become really good friends during the time Elliot has been treating her. Shannon has come back into the hospital after experiencing symptoms that aren’t normal for ALS. After Elliot gets her blood work back, she tells Shannon that it didn’t having anything to do with the disease, just that she probably took too much of her medication and should be careful about that. Shannon then tells her that she tried to overdose on purpose. She wants to die on her own terms, not trapped inside her body. Elliot doesn’t know what to do about this, as this goes against everything she believes in. She has a talk with JD who tells her that she needs to tell Gale, Shannon’s nurse, what Shannon did and to look out for her. Elliot is still conflicted on what to do as she and Shannon are friends and Elliot doesn’t want to do anything to hurt that relationship. In the end Elliot doesn’t tell Gale what Shannon did, even though she knows that she’ll be haunted by it forever. Well, I liked that we got to see Elliot is a story this week. And I guess it wasn’t suppose to be funny. So I guess I’ll chalk (no pun intended) this one up to the one storyline that worked this week. But I have to say, that scene between Elliot and JD looked like nothing more but to get them both back on the track to being together at the end. I hope I’m wrong though.

This is usually where I say that there were some funny moments, but like I said before nothing jived for me. The only thing I liked was the scene where Turk, Cox, Doug, and The Todd are sitting in the cafeteria and they all have laptops and are looking at the rate your doc site but Todd is at a completely different and more awesome site. But other than that nothing else made me laugh. So…yeah. Maybe the few episodes we get in the New Year (as there are no more episodes schedule for this year and I’ve read that the show only have about five more ready to go) will be better. But I guess every season has to have that one episode that just wasn’t clicking on all fronts. Maybe this was the one for Scrubs.
