New Movie Releases – Week of 09/07/07 Friday, September 7, 2007

Posted by Tuffy in movies, new movie releases, tuffy.

WTF is up, Doc?

Shoot ‘Em Up

Starring: Clive Owen, Monica Bellucci, Paul Giamatti

Pitch: Sin City as a joyful romp. With carrots.

Synopsis: Not much need for one here. Still, for completeness – Owen is a military powerhouse-cum-nanny protecting the baby of a prostitute (Bellucci) specializing in lactating fetishes from the nerdy evil of Giamatti.

Target Market: Young men. Oh, those supple young men with their disposable income and their lactating fantasies.

Why You Should See This Movie: It’s a taut 87 minutes of absurdism violence involving creative uses of guns (they open and close cabinets! they cut umbilical cords! they just might replace parachutes!) and a sly sense of humor.

3:10 to Yuma

Starring: Russell Crowe, Christian Bale

Pitch: …uhm, people still love Westerns, right? Right? What if we attach Crowe and Bale?

Synopsis: Crowe’s a bad man been captured. Bale’s a (mostly) good man and offers to take the prisoner to the next train out of town. Stuck in a hotel room with each other until the train arrives, they circle each other intellectually while gunmen outside the hotel circle in the other direction with uncertain motives…

Target Market: Slightly older men. Women with a fondness for stubble. Those who like their violence a bit more grounded.

Why You Should See This Movie: You like the great taste of two strong-willed smart men going at it, but you’re still gunshy after the food poisoning you got from My Dinner with Andre.

Also showing:

I get it. Morons are funny. Still, give me interviews with Apollo astronauts or a funny man turning his one-man show into a darling little film any day over that crap.

Westerns kick ass. Ever seen The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Rio Bravo, High Noon, The Magnificent Seven (or Seven Samarai for that matter), Once Upon a Time in the West, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Unforgiven, or The Proposition? Needless to say, I’ll either see 3:10 to Yuma in either the theater or on DVD.

I dig the cast of Shoot Em Up.
