trackback

We here at DeadOn don’t purposely attempt to out-lame our fellow brethren and sistren. It just happens naturally, and rather often.

There’s no better Lame-O-Meter (hopefully pronounced “lame-AHM-uh-terr”) than one’s ownership of music and albums. Today one’s iPod nominally determines how often they should breed. But when we’re young and buy horrible music, it’s cute. Or something.

In the second installment of (You Didn’t) Ask DeadOn, the available suspects answer the pressing question of the first album (CD/tape/Victrola) they bought. It’s the perfect question to see where one’s taste began. They can try to lie (“Wait, no, the Friends soundtrack wasn’t my first album.”) but that first album is just unavoidable. We could lie, but nobody does that on the Internet.

Suss–

Armageddon Soundtrack

I never thought I needed to buy music growing up (“Video games have their own music!”) until I was 15 and decided to be the most popular boy in school with purchase of the soundtrack to the summer blockbuster Armageddon. It was then I learned that ugly people like Steven Tyler have the ability to father extremely hot women. So now I anxiously await outside Abe Vigoda’s door hoping for a suitable wife in 20 years.

Baba Oje

Hootie and the Blowfish - Cracked Rear View

It was the summer of 1994 and my little league team was on its way to a second round exit from the playoffs. The soundtrack to that summer? Cracked Rear View by Hootie and the Blowfish. I would later have a cat named Hootie after the band, and yes, it was black.

Lady Andrea

La Bamba SoundtrackGhostbusters II Soundtrack

My first cassette tapes were the soundtracks to La Bamba and Ghostbusters II.

Holly

Ace of Base - The Sign

Ace of Base — The Sign.

Three facts in my defense:

1. It was 1993.
2. I was, in fact, an 11-year-old girl.
3. And I was actually living in Sweden, where they were hot stuff.

BowdenBowdenBowden

Aladdin Soundtrack

In all seriousness? Probably the soundtrack to the Disney movie Aladdin.

I was 9. And just to show that what you learn as a kid sticks with you, I can probably still sing the entire soundtrack. Does this count?

SVPIMH

It seems really pretentious and a little too good to be true but…

Radiohead - OK Computer

Radiohead’s OK Computer.

But, I only knew Karma Police and that I liked it. So there you go.

LenBiasCocaineSurplus

Space Jam Soundtrack

The first CD I even bought for myself with money I earned was the soundtrack to Space Jam. I earned the money by winning a bet with my dad involving me scoring 20 points in a youth league basketball game. Hit Em High is still amazing.

Clare

Metallica - Black Album

Metallica, The Black Album.

I was the baddest-ass fifth grader at The Baldwin School, thank you.

Goathair

Ace of Base - The Sign

My first CD was also Ace of Base. However, I was a 9-year-old boy living in Plano, IL who thought it made great trampoline jumping music.

Yostal

Pearl Jam - Ten

Pearl Jam’s Ten, in 1992 after seeing them on SNL, largely because my family did not have a CD player until Christmas 1991.

The Fan’s Attic

Ice T - Original Gangster

My first CD was purchased in 1991 when I was a 12-year-old country boy from the illustrious Columbia House CD Club. Not some of those 12 CDs for a penny crap, a real coddamned purchase.

That CD — Ice T’s O.G. (Original Gangster).

It’s funny ‘cuz it’s true. Still love that CD. One of the best real gangsta rap albums out there.

Boy did my parents hate me having this album. Although, not as much as the Marilyn Manson CD I got a few years later.

JukeboxHero

Rush - Hold Your Fire

Okay… so this may be the most random one. I still remember being in the record store with my mom and feeling nervous/anxious/awesome that I was getting a cd. I love me some Canadian progressive rock. Can we do first cassette tapes too? Good story there as well.

CDNMoose

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

Back in ’77 when I was, like 9, I asked for two albums for my birthday: Steve Martin’s Let’s Get Small and Sgt. Pepper’s by The Beatles.

I got the one “without the language”.

No worries — the cover was awesome and at the time, they were the only band I knew.

Good times.

Steve

emergency.jpg

The first album of music I personally bought was Kool and the Gang’s
Emergency. It was on cassette, and I rocked that shit in my Toys-R-Us
walkman.

UndergroundBTO

Metallica - Kill ‘Em All

First album was Metallica – Kill ‘em All. I spent quite a bit of time hanging out in a small music store in Queens, where I got to meet members of Anthrax and the Ramones,

Jerkwheat

Gin Blossoms - New Miserable Experience

First CD was Gin Blossom’s New Miserable Experience. I believe I was
13 at the time. Good times. I still have my copy of it and I still
give it an occasional spin in the car.

My first records? Neil Diamond’s “Turn on Your Heart Light” and Alabama’s “Roll on Eighteen Wheeler”. First cassette? Lionel Ritchie “Dancin on the Ceiling”. First CD? Bryan Adams “Waking Up the Neighbours”.

First time I realized how insanely uncool I am? Today, 9:47 a.m.

2. Jerkwheat - Monday, May 7, 2007

there is nothing wrong with any of those G-Shum

Roll on eighteen wheeler
Roll on

3. MitchKayak - Monday, May 7, 2007

The Batman Forever soundtrack was my first purchase, and before you scoff, it did have a flaming lips song on there. So yeah, that’s something.

4. apostles03 - Monday, May 7, 2007

My first album? When I was nine is bought Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” (1972). I was the youngest kid in my extended family, so my tastes were a little more evolved than the average 9-year-old.

5. Weed Against Speed - Monday, May 7, 2007

For me, it was either H20 by Hall & Oates or Pyromania by Def Leppard.

6. PaulU - Monday, May 7, 2007

First CD I ever got– “Dangerous Minds” soundtrack (as a Christmas present)
First CD I ever bought– Weird Al’s “Bad Hair Day” (you can’t beast “Amish Paradise”)

7. SteveJeltzFan - Monday, May 7, 2007

I don’t remember the first tape I ever bought, but I got my first CD player for my Bar Mitzvah, and the first two CDs I ever owned were Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” and Aerosmith’s “Pump”

The first CD I bought with my own hard-earned money was EMF’s “Shubert Dip.” Mock if you will, but when you’re12/13 and your initials are EMF, you would be WAY into that band too.

8. Sarge - Monday, May 7, 2007

Please Hammer don’t Hurt ‘Em over here…

And Suss…you’ll be thrilled (or sympathetic) to know that I spent a good three hours in Anderson Arena this weekend…

My back still hurts from the bleachers.

9. Hershey - Monday, May 7, 2007

Automatic for the People here. Then Out of Time. Then Eponymous.

I was a little obsessed.

11. mingusmonk - Monday, May 7, 2007

I can admit this. My first release owned (via a gift, I swear) was Duran Duran – Seven and The Ragged Tiger. Soon there-after, I went out and bought my own first tape with some birthday scrilla … Van Halen 1984.

12. Arkbear - Monday, May 7, 2007

13. Encouraging Referee Pittman - Monday, May 7, 2007

Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. On vinyl. The heat is on … ladies.

14. Tuffy - Monday, May 7, 2007

I really don’t remember for accuracy’s sake, but the first cassette that really resonated with me were either jazz cassettes I found in my uncle’s trunk (Grover Washington, Jr., Jimmy Smith, Louis Jordan, etc.) or the Batman soundtrack. I do believe my parents would have destroyed the tape ritually if they knew what Prince was carrying on about.

15. throwbot - Monday, May 7, 2007

I think BTO wins.

First album I ever bought: Nirvana “Nevermind” on cassette. Not a bad choice.

16. Elric VIII Emperor of Melnibone - Monday, May 7, 2007

I can’t believe no one’s first album was Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise, although I guess the Dangerous Minds soundtrack is close enough.

Incidentally, I won a Coolio CD (it wasn’t even an album, I think it was the single for Too Hot) at a Bar Mitzvah.

17. MoL - Monday, May 7, 2007

1st CD received — Nevermind
1st CDs bought — Automatic for the People and Songs of Faith and Devotion

2 out of 3 ain’t bad

1st Record – Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon
1st iTunes – Thom Yorke: The Eraser

20. DougOLis - Monday, May 7, 2007

Oh, is this the first one we bought? Cause Bringing Down The House and Dark Side of the Moon were gifts.

Hmm to replace the CD, I think it might be John Michael Montgomery. It could be Garth Brooks – The Hits; I forget.

To replace the record as bought I have to go with Thursday – Full Collapse

21. beingsven - Monday, May 7, 2007

First cassette… Huey Lewis & the News ‘Hip to Be Square’
First CD… Janet Jackson ‘Janet.’

22. Peter Cavan - Monday, May 7, 2007

I got Styx’s Kilroy Was Here on vinyl for my 10th birthday in 1983. I still have it in my room back home.

My first cassette was Weird Al Yankovic’s In 3D. I collected all of his albums on cassette or CD through 1999.

My first CDs were the 10 I got in 1993 from Columbia House when I wanted to build a collection in a hurry. I don’t remember all of them offhand, but there were all the GNR albums up to that time, some Van Halen, and Pearl Jam’s Ten.

23. Yinka Double Dare - Monday, May 7, 2007

First one I received — Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms

First one I bought — Jesus Jones, Doubt

24. Chief Wahoo - Monday, May 7, 2007

“You asked for the best and you got it. The hottest band in the world! Kiss!

Yep, Kiss Alive II

25. Ivan - Monday, May 7, 2007

I think i lose in terms of dorkiness.
First given – Barenaked Ladies – Stunt, and i still know the fast parts of “One Week”
First Bought – Soundtrack for Wild Wild West, i was 12 and that movie was amazing.

First Records: Quiet Riot, “Metal Health” and Neil Diamond, “We’re Coming to America”
First Tape: Duran Duran, “The Reflex”
First CD: GNR, “Use Your Illusion II” (my brother bought I)

now that’s a winning combo for a kid!

27. Suss-- - Monday, May 7, 2007

“And Suss…you’ll be thrilled (or sympathetic) to know that I spent a good three hours in Anderson Arena this weekend…”

You typically get two rows of bleachers with which to stretch your legs during basketball games.

28. Sarge - Monday, May 7, 2007

Speaking of…Gotta love the Sole Retiree – Nate Thurmond

29. undergroundbto - Monday, May 7, 2007

I win! I win! – throwbot said so.

30. The Fan's Attic - Monday, May 7, 2007

First CD: Milli Vanilli, Girl You Know It’s True

36. steve - Monday, May 7, 2007

If we are having a contest for the most ridiculous cover…. I win, hands down. I only polled myself, but I’m willing to declare myself the winner. (boy, that sounded dirty)

37. Arnold Layne - Monday, May 7, 2007

First CD i bought was Superunknown.
First cassette was either The Crow soundtrack, Metallica black album, or Weird Al’s Off the Deep End.

38. undergroundbto - Monday, May 7, 2007

TFA – I’m all across the board. It just so happened that the late 80s were my metal years. But I definitely appreciate the giants of rap (and some of the lesser knowns)

39. ska2682 - Tuesday, May 8, 2007

First cassette – Pearl Jam – Vs.
First CD – Rage Against the Machine

40. J.L. White - Wednesday, May 9, 2007

Wow, some of these choice make me feel really old, even though I’m not even 30 yet. My first record (yup, that’s vinyl, y’all) was Michael Jackson’s “Bad” album. Then it was “Weird” Al Yankovic’s “Fat” album, right afterwards. I was 10, and….well, I didn’t think Jacko was so bad back then, either. I feel a little proud about that.

41. undergroundbto - Wednesday, May 9, 2007

J.L. – you were 10, and you didn’t think Jacko was so bad?

Ever been to the Neverland Ranch? Just remember, it’s not your fault, son.

42. Chris - Wednesday, May 9, 2007

First cassette – Kiss’s “Creatures of the Night”
First CD – Kiss’s “Music From the Elder”

43. SpamSpamSpam - Wednesday, May 9, 2007

I’m with ya Chief. First album I ever received was Kiss Alive II. The first album I ever bought was The Grateful Dead, Terrapin Station. First CD: Dark Side of the Moon, which was probably, in fact, the first CD period.

44. Jon Pyle - Sunday, May 20, 2007

The fact this is my first post makes me nervous.

First tape- New Kids on the Block “Hangin’ Tough.” I had a t-shirt too. What can I say, I really though Donnie was cool.

First CD- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles soundtrack. It was a gift from a friend about 4 years before my family got a CD player. I never actually listened to it.

45. Blackavar - Saturday, April 24, 2010

Weezer’s blue (first and best) album and Oasis, Definitely Maybe. I still like Weezer a lot, at least their first two and some selections off of later works, and Oasis is a guilty pleasure. Meet me in Digsy’s Diner!
