We here at DeadOn don’t purposely attempt to out-lame our fellow brethren and sistren. It just happens naturally, and rather often.
There’s no better Lame-O-Meter (hopefully pronounced “lame-AHM-uh-terr”) than one’s ownership of music and albums. Today one’s iPod nominally determines how often they should breed. But when we’re young and buy horrible music, it’s cute. Or something.
In the second installment of (You Didn’t) Ask DeadOn, the available suspects answer the pressing question of the first album (CD/tape/Victrola) they bought. It’s the perfect question to see where one’s taste began. They can try to lie (“Wait, no, the Friends soundtrack wasn’t my first album.”) but that first album is just unavoidable. We could lie, but nobody does that on the Internet.
Suss–
I never thought I needed to buy music growing up (“Video games have their own music!”) until I was 15 and decided to be the most popular boy in school with purchase of the soundtrack to the summer blockbuster Armageddon. It was then I learned that ugly people like Steven Tyler have the ability to father extremely hot women. So now I anxiously await outside Abe Vigoda’s door hoping for a suitable wife in 20 years.

It was the summer of 1994 and my little league team was on its way to a second round exit from the playoffs. The soundtrack to that summer? Cracked Rear View by Hootie and the Blowfish. I would later have a cat named Hootie after the band, and yes, it was black.

My first cassette tapes were the soundtracks to La Bamba and Ghostbusters II.

Three facts in my defense:
1. It was 1993.
2. I was, in fact, an 11-year-old girl.
3. And I was actually living in Sweden, where they were hot stuff.

I was 9. And just to show that what you learn as a kid sticks with you, I can probably still sing the entire soundtrack. Does this count?

The first CD I even bought for myself with money I earned was the soundtrack to Space Jam. I earned the money by winning a bet with my dad involving me scoring 20 points in a youth league basketball game. Hit Em High is still amazing.

My first CD was also Ace of Base. However, I was a 9-year-old boy living in Plano, IL who thought it made great trampoline jumping music.

Pearl Jam’s Ten, in 1992 after seeing them on SNL, largely because my family did not have a CD player until Christmas 1991.

My first CD was purchased in 1991 when I was a 12-year-old country boy from the illustrious Columbia House CD Club. Not some of those 12 CDs for a penny crap, a real coddamned purchase.
That CD — Ice T’s O.G. (Original Gangster).
It’s funny ‘cuz it’s true. Still love that CD. One of the best real gangsta rap albums out there.
Boy did my parents hate me having this album. Although, not as much as the Marilyn Manson CD I got a few years later.

Okay… so this may be the most random one. I still remember being in the record store with my mom and feeling nervous/anxious/awesome that I was getting a cd. I love me some Canadian progressive rock. Can we do first cassette tapes too? Good story there as well.

Back in ’77 when I was, like 9, I asked for two albums for my birthday: Steve Martin’s Let’s Get Small and Sgt. Pepper’s by The Beatles.
I got the one “without the language”.
No worries — the cover was awesome and at the time, they were the only band I knew.

The Batman Forever soundtrack was my first purchase, and before you scoff, it did have a flaming lips song on there. So yeah, that’s something.
My first album? When I was nine is bought Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” (1972). I was the youngest kid in my extended family, so my tastes were a little more evolved than the average 9-year-old.
For me, it was either H20 by Hall & Oates or Pyromania by Def Leppard.
First CD I ever got– “Dangerous Minds” soundtrack (as a Christmas present)
First CD I ever bought– Weird Al’s “Bad Hair Day” (you can’t beast “Amish Paradise”)
I don’t remember the first tape I ever bought, but I got my first CD player for my Bar Mitzvah, and the first two CDs I ever owned were Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” and Aerosmith’s “Pump”
The first CD I bought with my own hard-earned money was EMF’s “Shubert Dip.” Mock if you will, but when you’re12/13 and your initials are EMF, you would be WAY into that band too.

I was a little obsessed.
I can admit this. My first release owned (via a gift, I swear) was Duran Duran – Seven and The Ragged Tiger. Soon there-after, I went out and bought my own first tape with some birthday scrilla … Van Halen 1984.

Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. On vinyl. The heat is on … ladies.
I really don’t remember for accuracy’s sake, but the first cassette that really resonated with me were either jazz cassettes I found in my uncle’s trunk (Grover Washington, Jr., Jimmy Smith, Louis Jordan, etc.) or the Batman soundtrack. I do believe my parents would have destroyed the tape ritually if they knew what Prince was carrying on about.
I think BTO wins.
First album I ever bought: Nirvana “Nevermind” on cassette. Not a bad choice.
I can’t believe no one’s first album was Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise, although I guess the Dangerous Minds soundtrack is close enough.
Incidentally, I won a Coolio CD (it wasn’t even an album, I think it was the single for Too Hot) at a Bar Mitzvah.

I got Styx’s Kilroy Was Here on vinyl for my 10th birthday in 1983. I still have it in my room back home.
My first cassette was Weird Al Yankovic’s In 3D. I collected all of his albums on cassette or CD through 1999.
My first CDs were the 10 I got in 1993 from Columbia House when I wanted to build a collection in a hurry. I don’t remember all of them offhand, but there were all the GNR albums up to that time, some Van Halen, and Pearl Jam’s Ten.

Wow, some of these choice make me feel really old, even though I’m not even 30 yet. My first record (yup, that’s vinyl, y’all) was Michael Jackson’s “Bad” album. Then it was “Weird” Al Yankovic’s “Fat” album, right afterwards. I was 10, and….well, I didn’t think Jacko was so bad back then, either. I feel a little proud about that.

I’m with ya Chief. First album I ever received was Kiss Alive II. The first album I ever bought was The Grateful Dead, Terrapin Station. First CD: Dark Side of the Moon, which was probably, in fact, the first CD period.
The fact this is my first post makes me nervous.
First tape- New Kids on the Block “Hangin’ Tough.” I had a t-shirt too. What can I say, I really though Donnie was cool.
First CD- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles soundtrack. It was a gift from a friend about 4 years before my family got a CD player. I never actually listened to it.
Weezer’s blue (first and best) album and Oasis, Definitely Maybe. I still like Weezer a lot, at least their first two and some selections off of later works, and Oasis is a guilty pleasure. Meet me in Digsy’s Diner!
