Hey, it’s a Tuesday with good bands putting out new music! BIZARRO!!!
Josh Ritter - Girl In The War
Folkie Josh Ritter has a new album…and so do New Pornographer and Rilo Kiley…TO THE JUMP!
Rilo Kiley - Under the Blacklight
I love Jenny Lewis in a totally non-platonic way. I even enjoy Rilo Kiley quite a bit. That said, the buzz on this new disc is fairly mixed to say the least. We used lead single, “The Moneymaker”, for a little YMR action a month or so ago, and it’s slinky, sexy groove was nice - but what of the rest of the album? I’ve seen the complaints of “overproduced” bouncing around like they do everytime when an indie band hits the mainstream. The good news is that it’s only gonna run you $7.99 at the evil Best Buy if you want to take a risk on a purchase.
New Pornographers - Challengers
The second of the discs that I’m guaranteed to purchase this week. (And I think it’s cheap as well…) Neko, A.C., and the gang return with some more glorious power-pop. It’s another disc that isn’t getting the best of reviews around, but that isn’t likely to detour me (nor you right?).
M.I.A. - Kala
I’ve not developed a love for M.I.A., but this is getting some strong reviews thus far and is certainly worthy of mention here on the ol’ New Music Tuesday.
Also, the DVD set for the new chapters of Trapped In The Closet are coming out. You know you want it. Let’s discuss in the comments.
Holy crap, Jenny Lewis and Neko Case on the same day. What will my heart do? I’ll definitely be checking both out. I never cared that much for New Pornographers as much as Neko on her own, but I’ll at least give it a spin on Rhapsody and decide if I want to buy it. Under the Blacklight has already been ordered on Amazon.
I’ve never heard of Josh Ritter but I like the sound. I’ll investigate. Thanks.
Trapped is God.
So I bought the new Rilo Kiley at lunch. They’ve been one of my favorite bands for years. I share the Professor’s non-platonic love for Jenny, and Blake is one of my favorite song writers, especially his stuff with the elected.
All that being said. this record is really dissapointing. It just sounds lazy. It isn’t even the production so much as it is a general lack of heft to any song.
Seems to be the trend for lots of my favorite bands over the past year to put out a dissapointing record. The Decemberists, Bright Eyes, I even have had a hard time getting fully into the new Art Brut. Eh.
Seeing RK in a couple of weeks and am still excited, just don’t think I’ll be spinning this record a whole lot.
I dig both the new Rilo Kiley and New Pornographers albums. Neither are groundbreaking stuff, but I strongly enjoy them.
Yeah the new Rilo Kiley has some real groaners…”Dejalo” sounds like a bad Miami Sound Machine song.
[...] instance, I mentioned on DeadOn that “Dejalo” sounded like a bad Miami Sound Machine song and lo and behold, Joshua [...]
