This Week In Rock: Hungover Hump Day Edition Wednesday, March 14, 2007

So, with the conclusion of finals earlier this week, my career as a college student is officially over (well, at least until I hear back from the law schools I applied to–fingers crossed!). I am now just a creepy alumnus who hangs out around campus, at least until they give me their diploma dealy that gives my claim legitimacy. So as it stands now, I’m working “full-time” at a radio station, writing a bi-weekly music column, writing for another music magazine, and in the process of contributing to a couple of other music websites. Plus, I get to go to all the college parties without worrying about classes. Right now, life is pretty freaking sweet.
This week, we cover news on R.E.M., Wilco, Green Day, Bonnaroo, the Shortlist Prize, and various other bands that I know you love. Details are available by clicking this little link right here! (more…)

Welcome back to “Tied to the 90s“, a not-very complete guide to a decade that was. I’m your host, Yostal, and once more, I’ll be taking you through the pop culture landscape of the 1990s. If you have any suggestions for future columns, please email me at GoinYostal@gmail.com or leave me a comment.
Today, I’ll be looking at 10 songs that were killed by being overplayed. This list probably will not be as “cool” as some of my previous music lists, but these are basically songs which were good enough to be really popular , so popular in fact that they probably got way too overplayed, which then “killed” them. With that in mind, here we go… (more…)

American Idol: Whelmed. And Muppets! Wednesday, March 14, 2007

You know how in 10 Things I Hate About You the Dumb Sister wonders how since you can be overwhelmed and underwhelmed, can you ever just be whelmed? I’m totally whelmed by last night’s performances. There were a few that were amazing. There were a few that were awful. And then there some other ones. I don’t have much to say about those.
So, real quick at the beginning. First, Seacrest is rocking the grey 3-piece suit, but he has a brown tie on with it that I hate. Second, it’s Diana Ross night here at American Idol. So they’re all gonna do drugs and then jiggle Lil Kim’s boob? Finally, I really think 12 Diana Ross songs in a row is….oh….10 songs too many. Can I even name 12 Diana Ross songs? [pauses] Nope. Why couldn’t it just be Motown night? She could still be a guest critic! Whatever.

However, video evidence has popped up to lead me to believe that Mr. Leitch’s hometown of Mattoon, Illinois is nothing more than a small Arkansas town placed into the heart of the midwest. The truth shall set you free….after the jump!

There was lots of douchebaggery in the world this week, but I’ve had one person in mind since last Thursday night. The person in question has done nothing wrong per se, except for simply continuing to exist. In fact, this may only piss off me and a few other people. But wrong is wrong and the crown shall be worn by this week’s winner. Follow the jump….and see who wins the award this week.

NCAA with a Deadon Twist: South + Final Four Prediction Wednesday, March 14, 2007

While most “experts” would have you believe that the fate of the NCAA tourney depends on the skills of the players on the court and the coaches on the sideline and how much money the dean’s pay off the refs to give them the calls I have a different theory.
The NCAA March Madness tourney can be predicted properly simply using the mascot names and the famous alumni and several other factors that will be fed into a computer giving me the proper picks.
Follow me for today’s team previews of the South region
If you missed the other previews.

I can’t resist…HUMP DAY HUMP DAY!! Let me be honest with you - this morning, I was about an inch away from putting up Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road” as it’s my last day in my office before a move to another division. Then, I remembered that it would amuse only myself and that’s just not worth it. So, instead, we’re going back to rock and roll. I feel like I owe this one to my Canadian homies after getting my hate on Canadian Prime Minister Neil Young yesterday. So, to my north of the border brethren, this one is for you.
We’re done lying for a living.
