IOWTMEA is not just a feature, it is an ethos. Over the course of my life so far, I’ve ingested a lot of music. I’ve written extensively about it. I’ve geeked out about it. It’s the epicenter of my life, and it’s done the job of nurse, camp counselor, confidante, lover, child, parent, brother, acquaintance and godknowswhatelseholyshitisitimportanttome. And with that has come a shadowy corner of my collection, a dark, shameful spot full of music that shouldn’t have grabbed me by the collar but did.

Welcome to IOWTMEA: I Own Way Too Many Embarrassing Albums.

In this issue: a movie remake of a Broadway musical brings good performances from some big-time movie stars? The soundtrack? A whole other story.

Tied to the 90s

Welcome back to “Tied to the 90s“, a not-very complete guide to a decade that was. I’m your host, Yostal, and once more, I’ll be taking you through the pop culture landscape of the 1990s. If you have any suggestions for future columns, please email me at GoinYostal@gmail.com or leave me a comment.

First, a quick correction from last week.  I stated that Del Amitri’s “Roll to Me” had the distinction of being the shortest top ten hit in U.S. history at just 2:12.  That was in error. It should have read “being the shortest top ten hit in U.S. during the 1990s at just 2:12.”  Tied to the 90s regrets the error.

Today, I’ll be looking at 8 Things I Miss About 1990s Comedy Central.. It’s not that I don’t like the current Comedy Central, I spend a great deal of time on the network. But, in its quest to evolve and change for what they felt was for the better, the network lost some great things. With that in mind, I present the following list. (more…)

The Definitive 200 Wednesday, March 7, 2007

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame found a soft spot in my heart when they inducted the Ramones. Now with this list of The “Definitive 200″ albums, they are attempting to make me hate them again.

http://www.definitive200.com/200_list.php

We’ve kicked this ball around the playground a few times in other posts, but now lets really dig into it. The list has potential, but I think there are some glaring mistakes. How would you fix it? What do you think they got right? Tell us in the comments.

[Some of] my comments after the jump.

Ryan says that the boys will take the stage, “and you’ll take control.” Oh Ryan. You’re right. What I would do to some of these—what? You meant I’ll control who goes home? Haha, right. And also, NO I WON’T! But we covered that. And I’m over it (almost). Paula has on some scary, sequined shirt with flowers, yet tonight she is surprisingly lucid and not quite as “Mary Sunshine” as usual. Perhaps the shirt has sucked away the Essence of Paula and left her all sober and bitter. Kind of like how I feel after tonight’s performances. Speaking of which, let’s get rolling…

Guilty Pleasures: Soundtracks to bad movies from the mid-90’s Wednesday, March 7, 2007

Let’s face it - the compilation movie soundtrack is a bit of a cop-out when it comes to buying music. Flying in the face of the concept of the coherent album, the movie soundtrack (the compilation variety, mind you, not the Morricone or Vangelis type) is usually little more than an amalgam of songs that may or may not be played during the movie for more than a few seconds each. When you buy a soundtrack, you’re usually just submitting yourself to the director’s musical tastes or placing yourself at the mercy of a record label exec with the word ’synergy’ tattooed over the part of the frontal lobe normally responsible for conscience.

And yet, by my estimate, I own at least 30 compilation soundtracks, and probably another 15 instrumental ones.

So there are in fact two sources of guilt to this post (double the guilt, double the fun, right?).

First is the fact that I like some of these compilation soundtracks more than the CDs by the artists found on the soundtrack.

Second, although some (though not all) of the movies I’ll discuss were utterly craptacular, they could also be considered guilty pleasures.

Enough of the movies, I’ll warrant, are probably beloved by various DeadOn readers, something I’ll argue is largely in part due to the soundtracks, so I’m looking forward to some lively invectives in the comments. Don’t disappoint me.

Join me after the break for guilt and cookies.

Okay, maybe just guilt.

Man, what a disappointing week in asshattery. I had a clear cut winner in Kanye West, but his publicist is insisting that his asshatitude was indeed low this week. Instead, I’m compelled to go with my backup option. The winner this week should have been the winner of a Hero of the Week Award - but they decided to only be a True American Hero for a week’s time. Follow the jump to learn who begrudgingly wins the award this week. And, yes, it involves America’s Sweetheart Heiress Coke Whore once again…

Well, it looks like we’ve all survived the Neon Bible hoopla. The album safely “dropped” (as the kids say) and there were no injuries to any bloggers of note - although I understand there were some asthma attacks over at TypePad. I was sick most of yesterday, so perhaps that makes me a casualty of the rock too. Anyway, now we can all set our minds on the next big releases - Modest Mouse, I’m looking at you - so let’s go on and gird our loins for the future. With March 6th firmly behind us and the future supposedly in front of us, lets embrace the present today, shall we?

You’ve got the start the car, the ice has come.

This Week In CanCon…CD Release Party: Arcade Fire - “Neon Bible” Wednesday, March 7, 2007

Welcome to your weekly fix of that which is notable (good, bad and/or ugly) that is streaming down from the stinking freezing cold these days.

This week brings us a real rarity: a week in which a Canadian artist leads the new rock releases. This sort of thing has been decidedly rare since Bryan Adams hung up his stock rock guitar and entered the artistic world of creepy photography (but they’re black and white, so that means they’re “classy”…at least, that’s what I keep reminding my wife when I get the camera out in the boudoir).

Arcade Fire is French Canada’s best export since Celine (and no, we’re not in a rush to get her back – no really… it’s okay…) and this week, they dominate the new releases.

So, this being such a special event, I thought hey, let’s get out the longest post title I can possibly think of, and get a couple of buddies to contribute their thoughts on Arcade Fire’s official sophmore effort, “Neon Bible”.

Anyway, Jerkwheat, goathair and I gave the album a listen or 20 and have compiled some initial thoughts, after the break.
