Elric Goes to the Movies: Ghost Rider Wednesday, February 21, 2007

What is a hero? Is a hero defined by the weapon he wields, the powers he has or the enemies he has defeated?
Or is a hero more complicated? Perhaps a hero is someone who actively struggles with keeping his powers from injuring the ones he cares for, or from corrupting him and making easy choices he may regret in the future?
Some “superhero” movies I have had the occasion to view try to address this, and I admire their attempts, even as I acknowledge their simplicity.
“Ghost Rider” is not one of those films.

Follow me, friend, and let me tell you what I think of this not-so-valiant attempt at a movie.

First, a shameless plug: for those interested parties, look out for my 5-part countdown of all things brilliant and Frank Zappa over on my other blog. Beginning friday, I will be looking closely at one of my idols, and putting together a tidy little primer of his music and why you should care. Now, on with regular business.
IOWTMEA is not just a feature, it is an ethos. Over the course of my life so far, I’ve ingested a lot of music. I’ve written extensively about it. I’ve geeked out about it. It’s the epicenter of my life, and it’s done the job of nurse, camp counselor, confidante, lover, child, parent, brother, acquaintance and godknowswhatelseholyshitisitimportanttome. And with that has come a shadowy corner of my collection, a dark, shameful spot full of music that shouldn’t have grabbed me by the collar but did.
Welcome to IOWTMEA: I Own Way Too Many Embarrassing Albums.
Up first: psychedelic rock from the motherland. (more…)
Tied to the 90s: 7 Television Law Enforcement Partnerships of the 1990s Wednesday, February 21, 2007

Welcome back to “Tied to the 90s“, a not-very complete guide to a decade that was. I’m your host, Yostal, and once more, I’ll be taking you through the pop culture landscape of the 1990s. Together, we’ll cover a lot of ground here, so if you have any suggestions for future columns, please email me at GoinYostal@gmail.com or leave me a comment. My goal in this effort is to remember with fondness (and occasional scorn) the decade during which I grew up, to introduce you (or at the very least, reintroduce you) to some things you might have forgotten about, and to have some fun. (Hopefully next week, I won’t need so much boilerplate.)
Today, I’ll be looking at 7 Television Law Enforcement Partnerships of the 1990s. Please note that there is no qualifier on there. There’s no “best” or “favorite” or “underrated”. It’s just 7 law enforcement partnerships that I felt like talking about in this post. That’s all. Also, please realize that these are all written as a generalist discussion of the characters. I am sure that there are fans of each of these shows who can and would go in to great detail with all the nuances I missed. Excellent! I look forward to seeing your comments.
Road Rules Recap – Revenge OF the Viewers or Revenge ON the Viewers? Wednesday, February 21, 2007

Since last week I provided a recap of the season so far for The Real World: Denver, I figured that this week I would do the same for Road Rules. Consider me your MTV Reality TV Guru, and join me in examining all the dirty secrets of shows we no longer admit to watching. I mean really, do you know anyone who admits to watching MTV reality TV shows anymore (besides people who visit DeadOn)? The scales have tipped for MTV, and it is clear that by 2011 there will never be ANY music on the Music TeleVision channel, but there WILL be seventeen different reality TV options for your pleasure.
Follow me down this dark path as we celebrate the return of Road Rules. (more…)
Movies to Avoid: Crank Wednesday, February 21, 2007

“Movies to Avoid” is, we hope, a semi-regular column reviewing movies that you should, by all intents and purposes, avoid seeing. You see, the authors are incredibly selfless people and will watch movies for you and tell you, when you shuffle along amid the videostore shelves or stare blankly at the theater schedule searching for a two-hour respite from life on Friday night, why this movie is worth neither your time nor money. To that end, any suspense found in the movie, unexpected turns and The Crying Game-type revelations will be spoiled because, as Wilford Brimley would say, “ It’s the right thing to do.”
Without further ado, this week’s movie is Crank, starring Jason Statham.
This 2006 flick is supposed be a non-stop, heart-pumping action flick and for the most part it delivers nonstop action. On the other hand, the only thing that doesn’t give you action is a camera trained on an inanimate object for a long time. (more…)
Oscar Week Special! Watching the Noms So You Don’t Have To: Little Miss Sunshine Wednesday, February 21, 2007

Unlike most blogs that wouldn’t piss on you if your hair was on fire, here at DeadOn we care about our readers.
We know that you don’t have the time, money or dating capacity to get out and watch all of this year’s Best Picture Oscar nominees. But you absolutely want to be able to impress your co-workers around the water cooler with your ruminations of what each movie has to say about the human condition, and you damn well want to win your Oscar office pool.
Therefore, as a service to our readers, some of our contributors are gathering every night this week at a renovated strip club now operating as a movie theatre (with very sticky floors) in Cary, North Carolina.
We are capturing their observations through a liveblog while they watch and annoy the patrons around them by talking incessantly throughout the movie and by kicking the chairs of the old people sitting in front of them.
Today’s movie is Little Miss Sunshine, as viewed by CDNMoose, GordonShumway, elric, Texas Gal, goathair and, for 10 glorious minutes, Lady Andrea.

American Idol: Old Gray Idol Just Ain’t What She Used to Be Wednesday, February 21, 2007

Seriously, what is with all the gray tonight? I felt like I was watching this on my parents old Magnavox. Anyway, the first round of the show that I actually care about is upon us and tonight we are starting with the boys. Some of these boys I’ve become familiar with throughout the season so far and some of them I’ve never seen before because of the stupid way this shows thinks we would rather see bat-shit crazy, emotionally disturbed adults audition than, say, the good singers. We begin with the freaky thing where the boys walk towards the camera, single-file. There are so many thumbs-up, fingerguns and pretend sparring with the camera, it’s terrifying. We then move to say hello to the judges and Paula looks like she should’ve been trotting around last week at Westminster, having some snooty old woman check her hindquarters. Everybody ready to start the men’s night? Follow me… (more…)

The point of DeadOn is to take on pop culture; pop culture tends to be defined by music, TV and movies mostly. However, in the intersection of art and literature lays an underappreciated aspect of pop culture: the comic book. This is the first of DeadOn’s look at the comic book, which will take place every Wednesday morning for the following few weeks.
I grew up reading Marvel comics. I couldn’t really afford my comic book habit (we were a broke ass family growing up in the slums next to the projects), but that didn’t stop me. I would just steal comic books from the stores. Kids reading this, I want you to understand something: Stealing from your friends or other poor people is bad. That makes you a bully. But stealing from stores (especially if the owner/manager is a prick) is totally okay. It makes you like Robin of the Hood. That makes you cool.

Every week, someone out there in the pop culture world does or says something that is just completely insane. Not in the “sweet Christ, someone help her” realm of new shorn headed Britney. More along the lines of “are you kidding me? who the fuck are you?” At least for this week. Follow the jump to find out who wins the inaugural Asshat of the Week award.

The Morning Rock apparently missed its wakeup call yesterday, but it eventually found its way home. Now that The Morning Rock has a tardy on its attendence slip, it promises to do its best to win back your trust. In exchange for its malfeasance, The Morning Rock gives you one of its favorite songs. The video, however, is just another Saturday night in Dupont Circle.
Listening too long, to one song.
