Ani-me and You: A non-fan’s guide to understanding this crazy Japanese shit (Part 1) Friday, February 16, 2007

So you’ve just packed away your used schoolgirl panties (straight from the vending machine!), you’ve been “massaged” at eight different kinds of sex parlors, and you’re about to eat your last piece of squid flavored candy. You think you suddenly know everything about screwed up Japanese culture? Think again, gaijin. This is a world of space vampires, tentacle rapes, and ethnically vague women with impossibly large, perky tits who can kick your ass. This is anime, kiddies, and you won’t make it through with your sanity unless you have a guide. Luckily for you, I’ve stopped masturbating to fan drawings of a Sailor Scout orgy long enough to write this helpful little primer.

It’s Friday. It’s the afternoon. It’s time for the Friday Afternoon Contest on Trivia (FACT).
For the past four plus years I have written a weekly trivia quiz on various topics, including pop culture, that goes out every Friday at 3:00. It’s a nice way to end the week (for the nine to fivers), so this is SML’s attempt to share it with ya’ll. Here are the rules:
1. You are not supposed to use the internet. That was the rule in the office. Now obviously, this is a website, so that rule makes no sense… but you get the idea. It is honor system – let’s see how much you know without looking it up.
2. We used to give out a donut (or doughnut, if we were British that week) to the top five scores; obviously you won’t be getting donuts from me. But you might get props, or even a big up.
3. It is spelled “iPod”, not “I-Pod”. SML is a gr8 grate speler.
With the Oscars next week, today’s quiz will be on a topic closely related to the Oscars: Notorious Academy Award Whore Tom Hanks. Please do not mistake him with the Notorious Advertising Whore.

So the dream that is DeadOn has finally been realized and we managed to survive the first few days. This brings up the question of how long DeadOn will actually continue. Will we hang around long enough to actually become something, or will we go the way of footsteps falco and die a quick, painless death? Well to get to those questions and more, I present to you the first of your weekly dose of futures bets. But wait, isn’t this just a blatant rip off of Cultural Oddsmaker, I mean they both come out on Friday, are satires of prop bets offered in Vegas and are released by men with mustaches you say? You could not be more wrong, I keep my upper lip bare as John Amaechi’s chest. Other than that, ya, this is a ripoff, but I prefer to refer to it as an “homage” and besides there will be nothing “cultural” about this. No, we here at DeadOn are dedicated to eliminating the culture from pop-culture and the funny from oddsmaker. What you are left with is a collection of futures over/under bets, that you may or may not find mildly amusing, but either way will be left feeling unfulfilled.
That being said join me after the jump for this week’s edition featuring DeadOn Futures.

I’ve always been a fan of The OC, a Fox offering that started as a hipper, more self-aware version of Beverly Hills 90210, the Puma to their K-Swiss. I loved it because the scripts were fresh, the pop-culture references fresher, and the viewer always got the feeling that the characters, despite their tribulations, were in on the joke. Honestly, it’s hard for me to resist any show where twenty-somethings play high school students, probably because I’m from West Virginia, where if you’re twenty-five and still in high school you obviously had a tutor.
But The OC is down to its final two episodes and based on the one that aired last night they’re continuing this season’s prevailing theme, “Fuck It, We’ve Been Cancelled.” What started as a revisionist dramedy about overprivileged white kids in southern California has turned into a quite possibly THC-induced free-for-all where recent episodes have included a film about an inflatable orca, clown porn, and most disturbingly, Kevin Sorbo. I’m sure that Luke Perry is pinwheeling in his grave. (more…)

I wish I was able to review Scrubs when it first come on. Granted not every show throughout a 24 or 25-episode schedule is going to be great, but overall an episode in the middle of the season during the show’s peak will still be good. Unfortunately the more this season goes along, the more I look forward to the syndicated shows at midnight here in Charleston. Maybe I’m expecting too much. Maybe I need to wait until some time passes. Either way, there is something missing from this season that was there the previous five. And yet, after all my complaining, I still enjoyed “My Perspective.” (more…)

Since we just started this little blog, I figured that I would pick up on MTV’s reality TV glut right where it is. But, if you simply must have a re-cap of Real World: Denver, here it is.

Ah, Friday Night Lights. Where else do you get football, drama, and people my age playing high school students? More importantly, where do you find it done extremely well? FNL has wasted no time in becoming one of the finest shows on television, although its weak ratings are doing it no favors. This week finds our Panthers dealing with the aftermath of Assistant Coach Mac McGill’s racist remarks as the team prepares for their next playoff game. Your recap awaits, after the jump.

Reality Show Season is Upon Us, part II Friday, February 16, 2007

So, the new season of Survivor started last week. It was pretty much like any other first episode: 20 people who appear facially to be diverse but are all actually quite a bit alike because they chose to go on a reality show were dropped off on an island in Fiji. The Exile Island bit is back, only this time the island is populated with DEADLY SEA SNAKES. The 20 people were eventually split into 2 tribes, Moto and Ravu, and when Ravu lost the immunity challenge an older woman was sent to Exile with the DEADLY SEA SNAKES and some pretty girl whose name I don’t even remember anymore was sent packing. We will not see her again until she gets to say one sentence on the reunion show in May.
For more on tonight’s episode, follow me….. (more…)

Thanks for an amazing first full day of DeadOn. Thanks to everyone who came from Deadspin and anywhere else on the interwebs. There is only one way to describe how good this feels. And that is by watching a fat kid dance to terrible music
